Yeah, but it revolves around the dead centre of town.

Then no doubt you will be able to tell us under which statute it was
made illegal, 'cos the Common Law is entirely silent about multiple
lanes on the Queen's Highway. And some references to case law would be
nice. Oh, and what is your view on the widespread scandalous disregard
of this 'law' by the two-wheeled constabulary?

Every state except California, if iirc.

I was told not to even try it in Texas, not because of the cops but
because some redneck *will* open their truck door on "one of them thar
    rice rockets"

Indeed, and it's commonly called overtaking. There is no requirement when
overtaking to drive excusively in one lane or the other (and it is fact
impossible to do so at all times during the manoeuvre if you think about
    it).

Filtering is not overtaking. Overtaking is when you move around another
road user in lane 1, into lane 2, then back into lane 1 and carry on.

Filtering, is making, in effect, another lane in which you travel.

    Or am I completely wrong?

I bet there's been shed loads. But they're all re-classified as
Dangerous Driving. Just because we was doing >69mph or so whilst
    filtering... :(

Annoyingly, I'm probably one of those stationary bikes - the 46ltr Givi
panniers on my FJR make it almost as wide as a small car!
The trick I've found is to wear a high-visibility vest. Makes car drivers
think you're a rozzer & they get out of the way =0)

    /me steps in late:

From the DSA's Motorcycle Riding: The Essential Skills (ISBN
0-11-552257-3) published by Her Maj's Station Office:

    ""
    Filtering:

The small size of a motorcycle makes it possible to filter through
slow or stationary queues of traffic. Filtering requires great care
and can expose you to additional hazards. You must comply with The
Highway Code and when filtering you need to:

    1) Ride slowly and be prepared to stop

    2) Watch for
    - Vehicles suddenly changing lane
    - Sudden opening of doors
    - Pedestrians and cyclists
    - Vehicles emerging or turning at junctions
    - Road markings or studs which could upset your balance

    3) Be ready to brake and/or use the horn if you don't think you've
    been seen.

Remember other road users may not be expecting a filtering motorcycle.
Make yourself easy to see by wearing bright clothing and use your
    headlamp in dipped beam.
    ""

I see there is no justification of what 'slow' traffic might be.

I appeared to be filtering at 70mph in traffic that was doing 50 today
on the M25. I'm not sure if that counts as silly or just impatient.

I have just started wearing one with flashing lights (not sure if they
are commercially available). The jury is still out as to how
effective it is on the road (its a wow down the disco).
