Actually, they've been lagging in this respect IME.

Surrey saddled plenty of roads with a 50 limit which on reflection
would have been fine if they'd been left as a national, years ago.

My experience of the Peak District a few weeks back is that it's
effectively covered with a blanket 50 limit on the bulk of the A
roads, already, whereas down here they're nowhere near as common and
there are quite a few half decent roads left with a national... at
    present.

Whatever, it's yet another 'no need' example to point people at who
aren't of the opinion that this country is going down the shitter, in
    part due to bureaucratic meddling.

Given the mayor here is, IIRC, over 70, that I'd like to see. ;-)

That, plus the "out to get you" approach is what I am pissed off about.
In both cases I was not being in anyway "excessive".
On the C&F I had been stuck behind Mr 40mph, I waited until it was
    *well* safe to go.

I went from 30ish to 70 to go past him, but it was a 50.

In the second case I was on a NSL, doing 70. I fi get done for that I
    will be miffed.

Only visible from Buxton end, approaching from Macc, the van is hidden
by the sign, and of course my attention was completely taken making sure
    I was overtaking safely.

I went through Bremen like a fucking lunatic on my way to Bert Weedon. Never
saw a camera or a plod. Mind ewe, I could barely see a hand in front of my
face it was pissing down that much.

When you look at what was the main road between Manc and Scouseland (the
A580 East Lancs Road) and realise that although it used to be a TRUE
de-restricted road (I've ridden legally along its length at 120mph) it's now
down to 50mph even though it's wider, smoother and with far fewer
roundabouts than it used to have, I have to agree. The NSL will soon be
    pedestrianised.

We have another here too (A666) which is a proper dual carriageway with two
lanes each side and a proper central reservaton seperating the two sides.
    used to be de-restricted, now it's 50mph with 5 camera's along it's length.
    Fucking stupid.

    70 year olds don't ride R1's?

It's to be hoped I don't get much older then.

I see this "splitting of conncentration" thing THE biggest concern I have.
If I didn't have to spend half my time looking for plod or camera's in case
I creep a couple of mph over the limit, I'd be a far safer rider.

Not that I'm a safety nazi or owt, but I've seen too many drivers anchor up
simply because there's a camera. They aren't over the limit, but they slam
    on the brakes nevertheless.

I'm not so sure "mainly" rings true for the East Lancs now, a lot of it
outside Liverpool is 40, form Walton Hall to the M57.
    Then 50 upto the M6.
Then NSL for a stretch to Golborn where it drops back to 50 again.
Around Leigh it goes back to 60, and back by Manc it becomes 50 then 40
    then 30.

So, I'd be interested in how much of it is actually NSL now.

    Very true.
    Spot on.
Saw it this morning on the A14 / A11 Junction. Scamera has been there for
years and some prat this morning goes belting up to it, slams anchors on and
lorry of all things in middle lane has to swerve into inside lane nearly
causing a _major_ event. I was legally going up the inside lane at 70 but
the lorry that was joining from my right suddenly swerved across me nearly
taking me and another car out.
The prat in the Be-Em that had stamped on brakes, just slithers through in
the middle lane at less than 50 (it's 70 there) then roars off at 80+
leaving everybody else trying to sort the mess out!

The Van is normally parked in a couple of places, but more often than
not after the pub on the long straight. I've also seen it parked down a
side road pointing at the main road on one occasion. But I've noticed
there are a couple of field entrances the police will stand in with a
hand held camera, plus they will hang back in cars on the side roads. I
tend to do it at the speed limit, if it's not the police it's sheep, and
if not sheep then oil/sand on a blind bend. Plus I've seen the
aftermath of about five or six car/bike incidents there and adjacent
    roads recently.

I was coming down there a few weeks back, just gone past the van that
was parked in a new location. A couple of lads went past in the
opposite direction, taking a 90 degree bend with the bikes practically
horizontal, I've not seen anything like it. Wondered if they got
caught. But I guess you have a good eye for transits and police cars if
    you ride like that.
