Well, certainly all the protectors are made from some sort of foam in varying thicknesses, such that there is hip and side protection that's not restrictive, but the back protector is about 3cm thick for most of it's length, thinning where it sits behind the hump. It does feel like a very absorbant foam - the guy in the shop got me to test it by dropping stright onto my knees, which is proof of absolutely FA, I know, but clearly they're good at absorbing low-energy impact. http://www.schwabenleder.de/index.cgi?z=20050805-5655517-1305031344&x=&y=&a=technik&b=start shows their 'patented' protection, which is clearly a different approach to the norm. As for approval, they certainly claimed to be CE-approved when asked in the shop and I'm fairly sure it's written in the labels. They've 'won' a number of German magazine tests as well, but again that's fairly meaningless unless you know the testing methods. -- _______ ..'_/_|_\_'. I seem to recall yours as looking like the aftereffects of drinking too much coloured liqueurs and then puking the lot in one go.. Phil
I wonder why they don't promote their protectors' accreditation on the web site? I know the German industry was and remains utterly opposed to the standards, but I thought they had got past burning crosses on the front lawns of anyone with an involvement with CE marking.
Sorry, but the late "Puce Pete" Warden's leathers still hold top position on the "world's gayest leathers" rostrum . IIRC, you've seen the photographs?
Just as a note to this.Last night I went out for a ride and the heavens opened up.I had sprayed my old LJ/boots/gloves and cheap leather jeans with,"Back-to-Black" clear silicone spray and wiped them shiney before I set off as I do if I don't trust the weather.Checked em this morning and no damp at all so if you do decide to test it please keep me posted etc
Not the German motorcycling industry. I have a copy of a letter to my employers of the time demanding that they dispense with my services, because members of the German trade organisation IVM didn't think that my pro-standards stance was compatible with the general industry view. As has been pointed out on ukrm previously, what is a good product this year (and perhaps deservedly earning a "RiDE Recommended" award) might be significantly less so in two years' time as alternative supply sources are established - generally to obtain a lower ex works price - and materials and manufacturing standards are adversely affected. Some companies do manage to control Quality Assurance across several sites and through shifts of production, but those weren't the companies setting fire to the crosses. ;-)
