That just about sums up the audio and visual effects of the
turbocharger of a Nissan Primera 2.2DCi going postal.

One month left on the warranty, thank God.

Googling shows that they've had a fair few problems with that lump.
    Chalk up one more victim.

Could have been worse. The VAG diesel engines occasionally decide to start
feasting on the engine oil and redline themselves until they explode or you
    manage to stall them.
    That's rather fortunate.
I'm sure you'll enjoy making your feelings known

Bloody impressive to watch though. Mechanics scattering, coughing, choking
etc on the *epic* amount of smoke, the screaming sound of turbo doing a very
realistic impression of a ramjet engine, and nobody brave enough to approach
the doomed vehicle to try and get it out of the workshop!

A mate of mine had a Nissan X Trail (I think that's what it was called) that
had their 2.2 diesel. He had a few turbos go and the garage told him that
there was a problem with all the turbo units. What compounded the problem
though was that each time they repaired the problem they would take out the
old unit and send it off for repair - and the unit they put in was one that
had been repaired already (this apparently is Nissans policy).

This was okay, if a little annoying, whilst the thing was under warranty but
he had to sell the car before it was three years old because out of warranty
it would be a couple of grands worth to put right and he was almost positive
    it would go again.

Don't they put a guarantee on the repairs?

I must say, I think I'll offload this one now....

SOGA would cover the replacement work anyway I'd have thought.

It's the bearings, apparently. It's being RAC'd back to Ancaster
Nissan in Croydon, because while it's driveable (albeit slowly), the
moment you put any pressure on the throttle you get a lovely rattling
tinkling grinding sound from the turbo.

On the Primera forum (www.nissanprimera.net) there seem to be a lot of
fellow sufferers. Four turbo units in 37.5k miles seems to be the
    record.
The turbo just seems to go phut. "They all do that, sir". I bought the
damn thing because I thought a new Nissan diesel would be about as
reliable as you could wish for. Boy, was that a wrong call. I've lost
count of the number of warranty claims, but it has to be seven or
    eight (including this one).
Oh, fukkit, what a good idea. Sod economy: I wonder how much a decent
    low-miler RX8 costs?

So in those terms, by the time it's ten years old depreciation isn't
    really an issue."

What you want is a nice reliable alfa. Then again, so does every alfa
    owner.

and for an exception to prove the rule, what about the Hilux pickup

Exactly. I'm spitting blood, because this is going to cost me. But
it's been an unreliable car since Day One, and it will not gany any
more reliable with the passage of time. So it has to go. And the
Ducati, bought with the the reliability issue hanging over it like the
sword of Damocles, has been fine. Go figure.
    Heh.

Well, once it's fixed, it goes. I wonder whether, say, 15k, would get
    me a decent nearly-new Saab 9-3 diesel?

the problems they have seem to be related to the turbos rather than
    the engines themselves, mind.

Champ () gurgled happily, sounding much like they were
    saying :
They don't. The Japanese market's like the American market in viewing a
diseasel car as a foul abomination against nature.

And don't forget that the Nissan diesels are Renault engines... Can't
remember whether the Primula is substantially Laguna or not - as many other
Nissans now are - or if it predates that. I think it is.

Is that right? I saw an RTA where a VW passat was going through a small
gap (1 car parked on LHS of road, 2 parked side by side on the RHS -
there were no spaces and someone had just parked up where he stopped).
It clipped one of the cars, then shot forward with the engine going for
it until it smashed into the cars parked at the bottom of the hill.

The driver maintained she was pressing the brake, and it seemed such an
odd thing to do as she hadn't caused any damage at that point, and
where she was heading was a dead end.

Sounds like a recepie for a 130mph hoon down the A1 to me.
