  1. 1st Group Ride for 2005

Well, the weather kept its cool, with clouds above, but many a brave
rider, ventured out to be on the first group ride for the New Year.
And what a turn out it was. 38 people (including pillions) arrived
at either MRA HQ (5 Quist Court Dandenong) or At The Mobil on
    Frankston Freeway.

Departure from MRA HQ was on time At 9:30am sharp, with a slow ride
down to the Mobil to catch up with other riders, 10:15am came around
and we were about to ride off, when Dale turns up with Cathy
Freeman, so we all set off riding to Portsea via the Nepean Hwy
for a well earned meal. With a rest/ toilet break, and some
refuelling for some at the halfway mark, we managed to battle
through the Rosebud holiday crowd, with their boats, caravans and
such, we finally arrived at the Portsea pub around 12:10pm.With the
assistance from Mark as the rear marshal, all arrived (bar a few who
decided to take the quick way via Arthur's seat and turned up
    late!!!)

Once all the bikes were parked neatly out front, we proceeded
through to our prebooked tables. All I can say about the pub was
nothing short of excellent, the staff, through to the meals were
    quick, delicious, and hot.
Everyone looked relaxed, and some even wandered out to take a chance
on getting a tan through leather pants.

One exception, a Harley rider snapped his clutch cable outside the
pub, but Shane, AKA Roundman58, came to the rescue and sourced a
cable through a Harley shop that was open on Sunday in Rosebud!!
(Wonders never cease) grabbed a cable, once some slight mods were
performed with the assistance of the dive shop next door, the Harley
was once again mobile. Most riders dispersed around the 1:30, 2pm
mark, with most taking a ride up to Arthur's seat, or simply a
    different way home.

Around a dozen headed up through the Mornington Freeway, back to HQ,
for coffee and more talking/laughter, until around 5pm . These are
the people who attended, and my thanks go to you for making this a
great ride in no particular order, (apologies if I have spelt your
    name wrong)

Unfortunately, 2 rides today, a "Netrider" run down Gippsland and
another group of fellows from Netrider and MRA but on another run to
Walhalla both saw riders come off. Jason "Mouth" Allen, and Paul
Edwards, VFR800 and CB1300 respectively. Jason's in hospital with a
broken leg, and Paul's suffering bruises.

Then there was a chap near Kinglake who bought it.

Thank christ the missus doesn't read these groups/forums.

I don't know Paul but I've met Mouth a few times.
    Bummer! Was he riding solo?
    Any news on what happened?

    It was a group ride.

I didn't see it, because, for some reason I cannot fathom, he was behind
me. In the tight twisties between Noojee and icy creek, he apparently
came unstuck on a tight corner at lowish speed. Broken tibia or fibia,
(spiral fracture, will probably acquire additional hardware). Jason was
transported by ambulance to Warragul, and from there he has (I believe)
been taken to Dandenong for surgery. he is apparently enjoying a close
encounter with pethedine. Luckily, the only rider behind him, acting as
tail end charlie for that stretch, was Jasmine, the E-R nurse and
sometime medico at superbikes etc. She had some clues when it comes to
getting a bike boot off someone with a fracture in their lower leg.
Jason will walk again, but not in those boots. One passing motorist
drove 20 odd K's to get phone coverage and call an ambulance. Another
carried a message back to the crash site, and a third passed a message
to where we were waiting at willow grove. MartyH nearly got cleaned up
by one of the two ambulances that attended.

Martyh has put a report on netrider, but it seems to be 'down' and for
some reason one of Marty's PCs has shat itself and he can't get on usenet.

Four people stayed with him and organised bike recovery. The rest of us
heartless bastards (about seven) pressed on with the ride to Mirboo
North, the Grand Ridge Rd, Macdonalds track etc.

One of the other incidents on the day involved a 250 and a dead echidna.
Did you know that echidna spines can penetrate a tyre?

He was one-up and had a low speed lowside on what I reckon is the best road
within a day's ride of Melbourne, between Icy Creek and Willow Grove. Saw
some photos and there's not much evidence of damage to the bike.

If RACV hadn't answered the phone and sold her an insurance policy for her
bike in the morning before the ride, Jasmyn would have been Jason's pillion.

yeah, I had to qualify it with "within a day's ride" because I reckon the road
from Orbost to Delegate would be the best, even if 20% of it is gravel/clay.
The other 85km of relentless twisties are worth it though:)

I dunno. The surface can get choppy, and the narrow carriageway makes
oncoming traffic a hazard. What about the roads up to Dargo or Licola?

Cat paid him a visit in Hospital today.....err.....yesterday evening (just realised it's just gorn
midnight). He has a spiral fracture in his Tibia and goes in for surgery this afternoon to have a
rod inserted to hold it in place. It appears the tibia has remained aligned so they won't need to
push it about. He's in alot of pain apparently, despite the drugs.

    Get well soon Jase. :)

Narrow, no defined lanes, hard to see where the road ends and the gravel edges
begin in the shadows, oncoming traffic and blind corners... sounds like the
    perfect challenge.
