    did one today:

    Pedestrians of the A414.

Not a problem, mind - just visited the Rye Mead RSPB centre for a bit
of a walk[0], and hadn't realised that about a 1/4 of mile of the long
walk is parallel and within 3m of the A414.

Given the traffic noise, not a surprised that there weren't many
waterfowl to be spotted[1] on that stretch[2].

[0] just after visiting the Rye House Gatehouse, which was
    interesting, if, well, small.
[1] not that I know a greeb from a tern or any other bird, really -
but A414 section aside, a nice walk.
[2] or on the spot nearest the Speedway circuit[3][4] near the Rye
    House Public House
[3] see, there's a reason there's no "OT" in the subject line.

It's a lot more peaceful if you walk north along the towpath towards
    Ware.

well, I'm sure. However, we'd already gone through the one-way
turnstile before we realised how close to the 414 we were going to be,
and since the RX was parked in the RSPB visitor centre's carpark, we'd
not a lot of option except to walk along beside the road, and then
    through the "water processing plant"[1]

    [1] i.e. sewage works.

Can you still afford the petrol for that then?

Ah yes, the pong is a bit special if the wind is in the wrong direction.
