Then there's the head. The blade's still swishing, and barely a foot away
    - yet the head's neatly stationary down by the feet?

Anyway, isn't the curve of the blade the wrong way for it having gone
from front-to-back? And don't they normally go back-to-front?

So either the swordsman's done damn near a full 360, or...

How can you tell it's stationary? It wouldn't be moving anything like
as fast as the blade, so it looks like wuite a short exposure.
That was my take on it.

    Something like that.

Here it is (again, potentally NSFW)
    http://petrolcan.me.uk/scan3.jpg

And a few more that I've quickly scanned this morning

http://petrolcan.me.uk/scan1.jpg (German gun at TsingTao is written on
    the back of this one)

Now the next two are a little odd in that they are on postcards:

http://petrolcan.me.uk/scan2.jpg (nothing written on the back of this
    one)

http://petrolcan.me.uk/scan4.jpg (NSFW, possibly)(printed on the back
    is 'Johnny Stores. Camp-Karachi')

Turns out the last one was a commercial venture

Actually having scanned a few more this morning I'm quite glad that
they *didn't* have colour photography back then.

    AOL.

Of all the things people do to each other, there's something I find
    particularly disturbing about decapitation.

It's the way the eyes move after it's happened. Reportedly.

I'm sure I read somewhere that the head lives on for a minute or so and the
decapitee (?) is conscious. Apparently some beheaded old royal gave the
executioner a look of utter contempt as her head was lying in the bucket.

Hard to know unless you are another chicken, or perhaps more likely a

People say Capital punishment doesn't work. That's down to a failure to
enact in public and method, 'cause I feel slightly deterred ;o)
