I had a VFR (1) do this last year - parked up on a busy Saturday
    afternoon at Lakeside Shopping Centre.

No breakdown cover and couldn't get hold of anyone with a van, so I
went over to B&Q, bought a nice big lump hammer and pry bar, then
smashed the lock barrel into submission to the point I could get the
    lock off.

Despite it being really busy, no-one bothered to question what I was
    doing...

    (1) It was bought to be broken up anyway, so no real loss.

A steering lock is just a metal tab that goes into a key (slot) in the
headstock isnt it? How much effort is it to simply snap the tab off by
    heaving on the bars?

Usually a solid cylindrical pin - on this, from memory, it must have
    been something like 8mm
More than I could proffer - I did try this first before setting off
    for B&Q.

Fair enough, Iv not looked closly at my current bikes, but I was just
thinking of older ones I have had.

An 8 mill cylinder isnt going to snap too easy I guess...

Once I'd stripped everything away and had a proper look at it, you
could see the alloy around the hole in the frame the pin located in
had come off a lot worse than the pin. ;-)

The CBX550 has a second click on the steering lock for parking lights.

The 76 CB200 has a parking lights position on the IGN switch - but the
    steering lock is someplace else.

The old Honda ones advance a large brass stub into a hole drilled in the
headstock centre tube, you won't shear the end off that without twisting the
    yolks.

I'm told that if you smack the lock barrel hard enough with hammer and punch
it shears a small pin on the side of the lock barrel and it pops out - the
one time I tried this, it just mashed the pin along the side of the barrel
and jammed it solid, leaving drilling out the only option.

OTOH when I sold the 750 Commando and couldn't find the steering lock key to
give the new owner, I just tapped out the steering lock assy with a
screwdriver as a drift from under the top yolk - took less than 10s.

Needless to say the new owner didn't bother to replace the steering lock -
bought a decent padlock & chain instead.

Well, you can't make an omelette without breaking a few eggs.
