As of 1721 tonight I became one of the great unemployed. Its been a
quick process at the end of a difficult 6 months. The pay out is crap,
5 years service at legal minimum plus 3 months wages in lieu. OH and
£500 towards retraining. Arse. In the last week I have applied for 5
jobs on line and have 7 application forms in front of me.

As one door closes another one slams in your face. At least the
Apprentice got good results in his A levels ( B B C D) and is off to
Coventry Uni next month to do Music Technology.

Just had 4 pints of cider sat out side the village pub, just starting
on the red wine. Just post quietly tomorrow as I may have a tender
    brain!

Tough break mate. Try to stay positive.
If it's any help, i'm doing between 10 and 30 online applications *per
day* at the moment, most of these going to agencies, but i'm getting
about 5 direct applications in too per week.

Depending on your skills area, you might want to step up getting your
CV around the various agencies. (But that may be unique to IT)

    Cheers,

    Paul.

Good advice. Something will come up eventually.
fark. I have never got a job through an agency, although I have tried
several times in the past. Often, when I saw an interesting looking job
that I could do, I found you had to go through many hoops before you had
any inkling who the potential employer was. Lots of meaningless
interviews and then if they don't put you forward they still won't say
where the job was - I often wondered if the job really existed.
Frequently the recruitment 'consultants' are clueless 18 year old
illiterate twits that send out ridiculous spam. Agencies - avoid IME.

What happened to the old clique? Did I miss something?

Sorry to hear about that. What about fucking off abroad until the
market picks up? 3 months pay is easily enough money to bum around
    Asia for a year.

Thanks for the comments guys. The red wine and cider have worn off and
the job search starts Monday afternoon and I may have a bit of free
lance consultancy work soon plus a bit of supply teaching at FE
    colleges.

    Cheersa

Alas I have the skills, but no public liability insurance !

Also the Part P stuff now required for Sparkies by law stops handyman
type work over and above replacing sockets on existing circuits or
certain non-notifiable work. You'd want a proper certificate of
completion from the BCO for a partial re-wire.

While I have to agree with most of the above, in some fields it's pretty
much impossible to get consulting or contract work if you don't go
through an agency because it has been decreed that HR has to go through
agencies as the latter provide "useful filtering".

Judging by the people I had the joy to interview recently, it looks like
    some filters need adjusting.

Tony, do you want the contact details of big bruv? He is based in Welshpool
and does some contract leccy work. Like Paul he's not part P certified but
he has an associate that will certify the work.

He's probably not available for a month or so, as he is tied up with the
music festival season. The associate may be available earlier.

his contact details are all on http://www.melodeons.com/ - this is his
primary business, and now is his busiest time of year as he does workshops
at festivals. Scroll to the bottom for a list of the dates when he is away.
You should catch him at home this week as Pontardawe has just finished and
he's off to do a gig in Holland on the weekend.

As I said, if Rees is not available then his mate who does leccy work full
    time should be.

Would 'bits of work' include things like replacing guttering, building
fences, concreting, building timber garages etc?

Or relaying patio tiles on a firmer concrete bed to hold the weight of
the conservatory, sealing some leaky gutters, stripping and repainting
    the living room?
