Yeah, that's the problem. But I saw it as a step towards my own LBS.
Just decorative really, although I've heard allsorts of bullshit about
    them.

Aye, I suppose you could do it in your spare time to build up a reputation.
I'll bet. Looks pretty trick, though.

You want some of these, you do: http://sheldonbrown.com/power_wheel.html

That's the plan. Being, or having, a well known good wheelbuilder is
a money maker for any LBS.

You should support your LBS, even if they're not as cheap as the big
chain stores or online retailers, because you're more likely to get
    better quality, service and advice.
    Heh heh heh

Forgot to say, it's not mythical: it's exactly what the guy who runs our
    LBS did.

Absolutely. I'm sure you previously stated the benefits of building a
good relationship with your local dealer, but I'm not sure how easy that
    is to do these days.

heh, I've worked in several. It'll be more stressful to run one of
them thatn my current IT role, but more rewarding I fancy.

I'm going to get a small holding in the middle of nowhere and keep lamas
and bees - against their will.

I've never made a secret of the fact that I don't enjoy IT. Even to
my employer. I do it because I'm good at it, find it easy, and it
pays me well. I don't get any job satisfaction from it.

I'm ambivalent to IT, I like "learning stuff I don't know about" and
"figuring out how things work or can be used", but that's not really a
job, so I've stuck with doing what I do because at least I'm
reasonably good at it and get paid.

Hmm. I thought the conventional wisdom was stress was a result of a
perceived lack of control of the situation one's experiencing.

Or Hove - I have hardware shops that weigh nails and cuts wood for you,
fishmongers, butchers, bakers (not Greggs et al), mad shops that sell
brooms and stuff, tool shops, independent coffee shops, three greasy
spoon - all within a 10 minute walk.

So for all my claims about never feeling stressed I'm actually
bordering on a heart attack when I come out with my usual "get out of
the fucking way" to one of our techs?

I actually put that down to lack of patience and having absolutely no
tolerance when it comes to someone not doing a job as well or as fast
as I could do it myself.

And here. We've put so much custom their way with youngest destroying
bikes that the manager has adopted her and has taught her her how to
adjust brakes, fix puntures and other bike related stuff.
Nah, he's got Bath farmer's market just down the road. The home of
mushroom girl, dodgy game poacher man, top vegetable selling totty and
the like. Fantastic place, if I can be bothered to get out of bed on a
    Saturday morning when I'm there.

OK, I've given up in view of the fact that the lad wants to take the
YZ85 to 'the chateau' for half term. I ended up breaking a spoke
trying to get the corroded ones free and had no time to get new spokes
and learn how to true it all up. A quick whirl back in the swinging
arm showed it is pretty wobbly at the monent.

Thanks to my treasured MoT place I have found a very local one man
band who will respoke it for me tomorrow.

I will report back on the job and value for money.
