Should have pointed out that the done thing with pushbike wheels is to
replace the nipple at the same time as the spoke, so we always just
    cut them out.

It wasn't until I came to get to check all the other spokes that I
discovered that several were so seized up that truing it would have
    been impossible.

A very common occurence with off-road bikes according to this chap.
When the time comes to go big wheel I might have a go at lacing on a
new rim. He wants to take to the hills, so could do witha set of
wheels that will accommodate some half decent road tyres.

I always dunk the end of the spoke in a tub of copper grease first, &
wipe a bit on the nipple where it meets the rim.

Funny how you can say grease, nipple & rim in one sentence without it
    being remotely smutty innit.

Hmm, as you may have noticed my experience only extends to pushbike
wheels but I was always taught only to use a little light oil on the
nipple rather than grease or anti-sieze. This was simply to aid when
truing to avoid twisting the spoke. Wisdom was that any grease or
antiseize could cause the nipple to loosen up and the wheel go out of
    true.

Possible on pushbike wheels I s'pose, but the tension's much higher on
    motorbike wheels.

    In communiqué
Well what a find. Complete rebuild with galvanised spokes upgraded to
heavy duty with beefier nipples for 55 quid.

Looking at Central Wheel's prices and taking in to account the proximity
of the gent in question, plus the 24 hour turn round time I'm happy.

He is a one man band motorcycle engineer and as well as wheel building,
he does frame straightening, cast wheel repairs and WUN type machining
    jobs.

His personal stable is a 600 Bandit, a rare Indian Enfield 'Clubman', a
very nice 400/4 (not for sale TOG!) and an MZ 125.

He had a modern sports bike in, ready to have the frame sorted.
Engineer's reports done for crash repairs and modified bike insurance
    reports.

    A *very* useful contact.

Indeed. I wouldn't want to publicise his contact details too widely on
the interwebby thing without his go ahead, but those in need can be let
in to the secret if required.

Depends what you mean by near. I'm nearer there than you. This chap is
in what Lenny Henry would call Duggurlie.

I'm sure UR transport could be arranged. Shall I email a telephone
    number for him?

I had a piss-poor experience with a LBS. I took my Dawes Galaxy in for a
rear wheel truing. It worked out pretty good value if I had the
mid-service as that included wheel truing and would also sort the
    creaking bottom end.

Well, it would have done if they'd actually done something to the bottom
end and headstock other than just wipe them.

Wheel couldn't be fixed either. Bastards.

I was forced to get my latest bike (a lovely Condor Heritage) from
BikeHut. Gutted me handing over the best part of £900 to the Halfords
group. At least a fair proportion of the money was Alastair's.

  14. Ditto. My nearest small town a ten minute drive away has all that and my
nearest village has most of it.
