Q: Virago Turn Signal Stay Replacement

    A friend told me he saw a web site that explained how to replace the
    rubber turn signal "stay" (holder) on the front and back of the
    Viragos. However, I can't find anything on the subject.

    I was wondering if anyone know how to replace the rubber turn signal
    "stay" (holder) on the front and back of the Viragos. They seem to dry
    rot pretty easily. I'm sure I could create something my self, but I
    figure why reinvent the wheel if someone else hase already got good
    idea.

    By "replace", do you mean "put a new one of the same design in the same
    spot" or "make a replacement to avoid paying for a new one" or something
    else?

    I'm assuming that this rubber piece is a grommet that cushions the turn
    signal and sits between the mount and the signal stalk. If that's not
    what you're talking about, could you point to pictures?

    Finally, I've found that occasionally spraying down rubber parts with
    silicone lubricant helps keep them from rotting out as fast. HTH

    Do the rubber thingumbobs go into a round hole, or a square hole?

    If they go into a round hole, look for automotive rubber grommets that
    will fit the hole and have the same size center hole.

    Add two large washers to spread out the load on either side of the
    grommet, and install a steel spacer sleeve over the part of the turn
    signal that goes through the hole.

    The length of the sleeve must be slightly shorter than the thickness of
    the rubber grommet so when the nut holding the turn signal on is
    tightened, the grommet is compressed by exactly the right amount.

    The "stay" as the parts breakdown calls it, is rather large. It is #8
    and #16 in the diagram at:

    I'm sure I could us a piece of pipe to replace it.

    Ah, that makes things clear. Yeah, A piece of thin-wall metal pipe would
    work. Depending on diameter, brass tubing is fairly easy to find, and is
    relatively easy to work with (e.g. solder and JB weld both stick very
    well). I'm sure you can fabricate something if you are so inclined.

    Mind, aftermarket "universal" signals are stunningly cheap. Depending on
    how much your time is worth, you might find it easier to get a set of
    those and replace the whole shebang.
