keep seeing a lot of big powerful quads on the roads nowdays,i only thought
you could register them if you were a farmer...
its just that theres not to many farms in Salford..

    and are they any good?

    **** knows, I ride a proper motorbike.
They're OK if you like 4 wheels, I suppose.

The main problem in the past in this country was that they were
classified as agricultural vehicles, so although you could register
them, you couldn't get insurance for private use. This has recently
changed, thanks to one of those EC standardisation laws, so you can now
buy certain models for private use.
The 4wd ones are great for trail riding, which is where the real benefit
of the law change will be felt. The more race oriented 2wds aren't as
good due to the naff ground clearance, but still good fun on somewhere
like Salisbury Plain. Something like a Yamaha 660 Raptor would be
obscenely good fun on wet roundabouts!

Most of them are still off-road based, but there is a BMW engined
'sport' quad available. ISTR it's hideously expensive though.

  8. They've been made road legal in France now - selling like hot cakes.

Wouldn't surprise me if it's happening/happened here too.

Well as it's illegal to use quads, or any vehicle on bridleways, it
won't make the slightest difference, as the insurance will be invalid
anyway. If you mean the roughly 3.5% of unpaved rights of way that are
open to vehicles, even less once CROW kicks in, then you've still got
the other 96.5% to play on.
Is that like the damage caused by hill walkers in the Brecon Beacons,
which is currently being repaired using several hundred tons of stone
    flown in by helicopter?

I rode one all last summer spraying kerbs & pavements for weeds. [1]

Knobbly tyres & soft suspension don't really cut it on tarmac.

But with a full tank of Round-Up on the back the wheelies make it all worth
    while!

a replacement for two wheels, and a damn fine addition to

  14. That's because you rode 'em where they're supposed to be ridden - what's
the fuckin' point in that, eh?

Now, in the middle of rush hour, OTOH...

Heh - I can vouch for that.

No helmet, barrelling along at 40mph, lidless on a quad with a *bad*
tracking problem, white spray-suit unzipped and billowing, looking for all
the world like a cross between Ghostbusters(tm) and the Michellin Man.

Your attention is divided between keeping the quad on 4 wheels, oggling the
young mum's collecting their nippers from school and avoiding the hail of
plastic bottles, copper-coins and half-bricks whenever you pass a gang of
    yoofs.

    <g>

Anyway - my opinions on quads are based on some 200+ hours in the saddle
working against the clock with the freedom to ride on any publicly owned
land ... roads, pavements, council estates, woodland, parks, canal towpaths,
dissused railway lines, industrial estates etc etc... all "in the line of
    duty" [1]

    What are yours based on?

[1] best job I ever had. Only ever worked when it was dry & never more than
2 mins away from a decent greasy-spoon cafe.Wages were shit, mind.

  18. Now I know why you think they're boring - no imagination on just how
much fun and chaos you can cause in just a few minutes playing

  19. Nope - I've got imagination. Plus, I have a sneaking suspicion you're
still looking at them as modes of transport, which I don't
