Question for SE Victorians

  1. Here's the skinny.

    I have a 2000 model Honda VTR 250, wioth 54,000km on the clock. It's
almost out of registration, and it's got some minor issues, though is
mechanically fairly sound (but due for a service/tune).

To get it to saleable quality (likely needs new brakes/tyres, though
still fairly good), is looking to cost some money. And I honestly
don't know if the money spent is worth the investiture.

So, I have a couple of questions.

First, is the names of people's preferred motorcycle mechanics
(fallback is I do the service/tune and keep it unti the engine falls
out). South East Victoria specifically (I'm 2km from Waverly Gardens).

Second, what would be the minimum price I'd get for an operational
VTR250 at a wreckers? Would it be better trying for a tradein?

Third, what would be a reasonable new bike to upgrade to, and what
price range would I be looking at?

Fourth, any other suggestions? That don't involve potential jail
    terms.

Get the tyres and brakes done, get a roadworthy certificate, and put it
    on e-bay.

My lovely wife got $2600 for her very rugged-looking 1996 GPX250 a few
months ago using that tactic. We would have been quite pleased to get
    $1000 for it.

A wrecker will give you less than $500. They're not in the business
    for fun, after all.

Bah, totally clapped out and they never were any good anyway. Just drop
it off here and I'll dispose of the poor thing for you.

I go to New World Honda in Berwick. Used to take my bikes to a place in Dandenong, but their work turned out to be sub-standard, to
say the least (as an example, had fork seals replaced and a month later they were leaking again, not to mention what they did to the
    forks themselves).

Do the brakes need new disks or just pads?
Forget a wreckers. As BT said E-bay is probably your best bet. If you've just about written the bike off value-wise, then selling it
via E-bay may give you more $$ than you expected.
How long is a piece of string? Get out to bike shops and sit on as many as you can to get an idea of what might suit you. Better
still, try and get as many test rides as you can. As for price, better to set yourself a budget and shop around within that.

  5. They'll give you **** all for it. I'll give you $50 more than any
    wrecker offers you for it...
Nope, best bet is sell it privately. Like others have said, eBay is
likely to work well. I'll bet even in here you'll get a serious inquiry
or two if you offer it for $1000 (which is likely to be twice what a
    wrecker offers).

My gut feel (reasonably calibrated to Sydney VTR250 prices as of Oct-Nov
last year when I was looking for bikes for the girlfriend) is that a
reasonable condition '00 model will be asking $4500-$5000, and probably
    accepting something over $4k.

If _I_ was haggling with you, I'd be saying "It needs rego, it'll cost
me $150 to get the brakes done, and $400 for a set of tires, I'll give
you $3000 for it." I'd then do the brakes myself for $40, and get tires
for closer to $300 for the pair.

If I was you, I'd be advertising it towards the lower end of what other
people are asking in the trading post in your state, then let them talk
you down based on the tires and brakes and rego and accept the first
reasonable offer. If its actually running, even if its "got some
issues", I'll be amazed if you can't get $2500 or more for it...

Martin Taylor will be along shortly to beat you about the head and point
out that Waverly Gardens is not SE Victoria. It is SE Melbourne.
Victoria (despite appearances) extends some distance beyond the metropolis.
