    The car's MOT certificate runs from 20th July 2004 to 19th July 2005 (i.e.
    tomorrow).

Can I still get it taxed on the old certificate, tomorrow, or do I need to
get a new one - i.e. does my current certificate expire at 19-JUL-2005 00:01
    or 19-JUL-2005 23:59 ?

I'm going away for a few days at the end of the month, and I know that the
exhaust needs fixing before it'll pass an MOT, so "getting my ducks in a row"
might be a bit tight - and I don't want to get nailed by the SORN nazis

And yes, yes, yes, I should have got this all a bit better organised, but I
    CBA ...

AFAIK it's valid for all of the 19th.

  3. It's valid all day. However it probably wont help you as it needs to be
valid on the day you want the tax to start.

What's the best deal for a replacement exhaust then - kwik-fit?

Normally your local 'back street' type independant garage. Especially if
it's run by a guy who looks like he should have retired years ago and
doesn't bother invoicing until weeks after you collect the car.

What if his workmanship is like his invoicing?

The one man bands that have been going for donkeys' tend to be good.

Personally I'd avoid any of the big franchises as (a) they're not cheap
and (b) the workmanship tends to be shit.

  11. My local garage usually remembers to invoice when his VAT is due and
I've had to remind him before that I owe him money. The workshop isn't
shiny, there's no carpet or coffee machines. There's a number of
locals who's friends and relatives arrange servicing to coincide with
visiting. So I don't think you can infer poor workmanship from
    lackadaisical office procedures.
