  5. Then that would make it easier, you wouldn't have to sneak up on him

Many many beers last night Johno.
Day 1 of the trip was a washout. It was pouring rain and very cold and the
XJ started to misfire as I turned onto the Reefton Spur and cut in and out
cylinders all through the spur and onto the road to Alexandra.
About 3km from Alex it finally ground to a halt and I just sat there wet,
exhausted and miserable while 20-odd bikes rode past and none slowed to
offer help (although one cheerily tooted his horn as he rode by).
To add insult to insult bloody Leon even rode past and later claimed that he
didn't recognise me OR HIS OWN BIKE!!
I got a lift into Alex and I was so exhausted I paid $78 for a cabin where I
dried off and made myself a cup of tea but I had to keep wearing the wet
clothes 'cause my luggage was back on the bike.
Hank the mechanic from opposite the caravan park went home and got his
golf-buggy trailer and went out and fetched the bike. He put the buggered
battery on charge and helped me drain and strain the petrol in the tank but
we just couldn't get the bike to fire so Leo had to bring his bike trailer
out after work and take me back to his house at Warburton.
Day 2 was much drier and the bike started and ran first pop!
I dodged rain-clouds all through Vic but it was dry from Albury onwards. The
bike would only run on "prime" now and seemed to run better on E10 than PULP
and it suffered one more cutting in and out episide that left me paddling it
    into a garage at Grenfel.
It was dark but Dubbo was full so I tucked in behind a semi and went to
Gilgandra to a motel where I turned the electric blanket onto 3 and went to
    bed.
Day 3 only had one or two minor episodes but I was smart-enough to leave it
on prime and fill up at 250km intervals and I made it home OK.

Should have taken me up on the offer of the GS Clem, 600 kilometres per
tank, fettled by Ray Peake so no break downs, nice large screen, heated
    grips etc.

  9. You are lucky you never chose the Gilgandra Caravan Park to stay overnight
Last time I stopped overnight there, it was about 5 degrees below zero and
they wanted $2 for a blanket and $5 for a heater
But I turned the gas oven on and stayed warm that way.

Homie don' do no walkin'! (these feets is made for footpegs!)

The XJ never actually ran out of fuel but what was there wasn't getting to
the carbs. This initially manifested itself as a very-slow recovery from
switching from main to reserve but eventually it wouldn't run at all unless
on prime and with a better-than-quarter-full-tank.
I think the whole wasted Monday was because I had it on reserve instead of
prime and not because of the rain at all!!

Biker Betty and I pulled the tank off and cleaned-out the fuel-tap on Friday
morning but that didn't seem to make a difference. I checked the vacuum-line
too but I must've missed a crack or maybe split in the diaphragm.....

Right now I'm avoiding working on a bike...

Anyone in Sydney want to come over and drink my beer while guilting me
into working on the Old Girl?

    Very bad.
It was a spark-plug broken off and bouncing around the combustion-chamber
for 6 months before tangling with the valves last Thursday.
The bike-shop have declared it "not worth fixing" (well it's 10 years old
mate) so I'm gonna' go fetch it today and park it out the back.
Michelle has banned me from dismantling it until after 10/11 'cause she
wants the area for a party so I'll attack it after then.
In the mean time I'm hoping Leon's generosity holds out......

I dunno.. I wouldn't pass the opportunity to watch Mick win at the
Island.. (did he also wrap up the championship at that race?) also back
in those days there were a full grid of riders, not the pathetic turnout
they get these days... 44 riders, substitutes and wildcards rode in the
98 season, compared to 21 this year. There must be some way they can
stimulate the interest and investment to boost the grid numbers again.
