Was that the year that little-Kenny had the race shot-to-bits but his rear
    tyre fell apart?

This is the pic of the inglorious end to the day.

I am much much wetter and more miserable than I look!

    Aargh; must you torment me?!!?
I visited my mate Howard yesterday and he said "My Diversion is just sitting
in the shed and could've done with a run... why didn't you tell me?"
It's weird but I just couldn't take your or Howard's bikes though I was
happy to take Leon's; partly because Leon's is only worth about a fifth of
Howard's and a tenth of yours but mostly because I was riding WITH Leon.
Riding with a mate on his spare bike doesn't seem so bad as just taking a
mate's bike and returning it 4700km later with a "thank you, come again!".
Of course that all fell to pieces when Leon abandoned me at Alexandra and I
had to ride home alone anyway!

    Sheesh Clem, that's horrible.....

<betty silently thinks it's a good thing she and Clem didn't make the return
trip together - so many opportunities for betty to pull over and fall off
    ;-)>

But seriously.... what a crappy ride home, Clem. Bet you were very bloody
relieved when you finally got back! Glad you managed to get there all right!

    Thanks Betty.
In retrospect soggy-Monday wasn't such a big deal but the cold must've
affect my thinking because I was just so helpless sitting there in the rain
with a flat battery and a bike that wouldn't run.....
I was ready to just sit down and dissolve but I finally summoned up myself
and decide to walk to town.
A feller came past in a little car then chucked a U-ey and came back to
offer me a lift but I initially didn't accept because he had cloth seats and
I was saturated but he told me he was a bikie too and that somehow made it
    OK.
A few hot cups of tea, a cup-a-soup that the mechanic gave me and one of
those curries I had in my backpack later and I was starting to think
straight but still not straight-enough to get going again.
Thankfully Leo rescued me and after a good night's sleep the same problems
(in the dry) were suddenly so trivial and controllable!

Clem you must come over one day and I will introduce you to some riding gear
that is totally waterproof, Gortex and heated jacket liners etc.

And we only have 2 Crown Largers left (and 3 cans of VB some clown left
    after a BBQ).

I actually prefer to do the long ride home alone, I am happy to sit on the
bike for 500 kilometres per leg, very few of my riding mates can manage much
    more than 350 (Ray excepted).

We did 900, 600, 800 on the way down then I did 80 (and a trailer back to
Leo's) 900 and 800 on the way back home.
I can only do 200-or-so per leg though (down from 300 a few years ago). I
only need a stretch and a drink and I'm ready for another 200 though.
The XJ is pretty comfortable when it's engine is running so it's no worries
but I thought Betty would have trouble with an 800km through-the-snowies day
but apart from dropping the SV then doing 30km in first gear she was a
    trooper!

Isn't that a strange optical affect, shooting number plates through
    falling rain.

Does "per leg" mean "between petrol stops" or "only stopping for
    fuel"?

I can do 5-600 with fuel stops so therefore minute or two to unkink the
legs, and have done 800 with 3 petrol stops and a loo break but I dunno
I could do more than 4 hours saddle time without at least 2-3 minutes
to get off the bike and give the bum a rest.

I think he means 500km between stops. I rode 207km yesterday. Only
stopped and got off the bike about 10 times.

5-600 kilometres without stopping (35 litre fuel tank) start with full tank
in the morning stop for fuel and lunch stop again in the evening. 1,000
    kilometre day (assuming bladder integrity).

I have a custom John Morehouse saddle so 500 kilometres in a sitting is no
problem. Intercom wired to UHF CB and iPod.

Generally only done on the way home from a long trip (transport sections).
