R100 GS Tranny Seal

The rear seal of my tranny is leaking on my '95 R100GS w/ 18,000 miles
(as is evidenced by gear oil leaking out of the drive shaft boots. It
appears that it may be easiest to replace the seal with the tranny
removed first. That way I can also easily inspect the output bearing to
see if that is causing the seal to leak. I am sure there are many tips
and tricks to removing the transmission w/ o removing the engine. Does
anyone have any links to websites that describe this or have any further
    insight?

    Thanks,

i find a slight amount of lube in the boot but there's no leakage outside
    in my '81 r100rt.
the tranny comes out ok but i have to remove the swing arm pivot pins to do
    it.
unless it becomes a real problem, i'd just check the lube level (on the
    center stand)
    occasionally..
    good luck, sammmm

I found about 4 oz. of oil in there. It is coming out of the rear boot
and getting on the rear tire. Not too good! The oil level *was* correct
    until the leak started.

  4. Not clear if you meant an R100 or an R1000 GS. For an airhead,
you might want to look at Ed Korn's pages: www.cycleworks.net

Not up on oilheads, but suspect replacement gets tricky on both
because of the hookup for the U joint. On an airhead at least,
I'd definitely separate the tranny to make it easier to see and
    access.

  5. And are you sure it's from the tranny as opposed to the final drive ?
What's the oil level in each ?

Oil level is low in the gearbox, fine in the rear end. Thanks for the
    suggestion.

    Thanks Dan.

One of the websites I looked at indicated that the 94's and 95's had the
circlip. I am going to send it out, but I may send it to Oak Okleshen.
He seems to be the national expert on airheads and has offered to
    inspect the tranny.

    Take Care
