A rational, well argued response? You're not local, are you?

  3. Ambivalent. I always wonder why they feel the need to do so; in any
case, I never listen to that sort of thing. Guitar, bass, drums,
optional vocals and keyboards (ideally a massively overdriven Hammond
    & Leslie combo), that's all I need.

That's the drumkit on this one. I think you must have the better
    version with more voices.

  9. Anyone in the vicinity of Edgbaston wants to give Zurich Insurance a
good kicking, be my guest, maybe make them get their finger out.
Otherwise I recommend patience. The Dark Side will be victorious...

  12. Heh, my Mum still chortles at a comment my Dad made, circa 1963: The
    Beatles? They'll never last.

So what you're saying is that you like what artists release unless they
release something you don't like because you're stuck in the late 60s?

    *Now* I understand.

Just because it's been released, doesn't mean you *have* to listen to it.

  15. I thought for one long horrifed moment you were suggest that Kylies
    sister had done[1] Floyd..

And then I realised that in a sane universe such an
abberation would never be permitted to exist.

I'm just off to cleanse the image from my mind with large amounts
of Flower Kings. And no - it's not drinkable.

    Phil.

[1] In a musical way natch. I mean - she probably has done[2] someone
    called Floyd.
    [2] In a non-musical stylee. IYSWIM.

  16. I'll take it further, if it helps; I don't think this is going to
compliment me much, but here's how it is.

Rock music is my thing. I like it, a lot (not unlike motorbikes). I
do not like the "dance music" culture, or whatever you want to call
it; however, it's a free country (for certain values of "free") and I
can live with its existence, if it leaves me alone. I feel that there
    is a certain demarcation between the two, which keeps them separate;
when this line is crossed, I feel, not necessarily consciously or with
any objective justification, that what I value is under threat and
respond accordingly. I don't think I'm alone in this. Presumably,
those responsible for the DSOTM "trance mix" believe that they have
improved upon the original? I don't, and feel anger towards that.

Oh, and for the record, I'm more into mid 70s to mid 80s stuff.

OK, I'm prepared to be corrected on this, but AIUI permission has to
be sought before a remix or cover not in the style of the original
    recording can be released.
This means that if you've heard it, the artists (or, at the very least,
songwriters) you like so much have given their approval for the version
    you dislike.

So there's no point getting angry about it, because the remix has been
sanctioned by the original artist/writer, who gets all the money (the
remixer gets a producer credit and a one-off payment - when Jason
Nevins took 'it's like that' by Run DMC and put a phat beat under it,
he got about 3 grand iirc, DMC got the royalties)

And there's no point getting angry about it, because surely you have
more important things to worry about???

  18. Don't think so, but ICBW too.
    Not necessarily...
He didn't completely change the style of the song, it was still one of
those hip hop things. Also I personally hate, with an irrational
    passion bordering on the fanatical, the use of the non-word "phat";
it's up there with Burberry check (on anything) and blue LEDs in
    windscreen washers for me.
    Hey, I'm an irrational kind of guy. I worry about the little things;
big things are either going to happen or they aren't, and I'll take
them on if and when they do.
