My mate has a CBR400 and is starting to feel to cramped and wants to raise
the ride hight. Any one got any ideas.

    Replace with a full-sized bike?

Seriously - AFAIK, the little CBRs are generally bought by the small
of stature, simply because they are small bikes. If your mate is
cramped, then your mate is too big for the bike. Raising the ride
height would likely ruin the bike's handling and will not result in
more room to move about on the bike, except at a standstill with feet
    down IYSWIM.

Moving the bars a bit (if possible) may extend the reach a bit and
fitting rearsets to the pegs may increase the legroom - but there
again, may result in a more crouched and cramped position. It is
possible on some bikes to replace the "dogbones" in the rear
suspension linkage with shorter items (you may have to get these made)
which will raise the rear, and it will probably be possible to drop
the fork tubes down through the clamps to raise the front.

But a bike raised in this manner will be likely to be less stable and
less predictable on the turn-in than it was - I would be very careful
    about undertaking such mods.

If the cramped feeling is due to the crouched position, something as
simple as a thicker seat pad may help - and it is quick, cheap and
easy to bodge up an experimental version.

    Snipped and I totally agree.

I am the standard length of 5ft 8.5 inches.

Much as I loved the bike, It had to go due to the agony incured
after riding for anything over 30 mins.

It was ok on fast journeys
where the wind lifts you up and takes some weight off your wrists
    though.

Can't think of anything safe you could do to raise the seat height.
IIRC the comfort factoris is more to do with the seat to peg distance.

Oddly, I have exactly the same problem with the RF, which is by no
means a small bike. The ergonomics are all wrong, though - long
stretch to the bars which are low enough to make it 'wristy' - but the
real problem is as you say, the seat/peg arrangement. The RF pegs are
quite high, with plenty of ground clearance - but they are an inch
closer to the seat than those of a CBR600.

Not only that, but the pegs are over two inches further forward
relative to the seat than the CBR, which means I have to bring the top
of my foot right up towards my shin as hard as I can if I want my toes
on the pegs. Hopefully I'll be modding this by acquiring a pair of
rearsets that place the pegs three inches further back than their
current position, which will make it much more comfortable.

Or I could just sit on a whoopee cushion ...

Will you two stop talking about height. I can only dream of anything
above 5' 4" but there is no bike I can't ride. I well used to sliding my
quaint little bum off the seat to get my foot down.

The Team-UKRM race bike was a bit of a problem, there was no way I could
touch the ground and sometimes the mechanics would forget and let the
bike go. Mike and Gyp only just caught it on a few occasions.

I remember when we were racing at Pembrey. during practice someone
crashed into me at the hairpin, I had just about started to tip into it
and he hadn't braked. He walloped me up the rear trapping me between the
rear hump and the tank. I slowly rode to the run off area and tried to
balance the bike as long as I could but the marshals were a little late
getting to me and I just toppled over in slow motion. Still trapped
    though.

They may not be pretty, but with you on top of them I don't think
    that'll be a problem.
