Raleigh Runabout MOT requirements?

    Hi all

I'm new to this group and in fact new to two wheeled transportation! I
have just acquired a 1966 Raleigh Runabout moped and am due to sit my
CBT in a couple of weeks to validate the moped entitlement on my car
license. The moped is pretty much all there, but needs quite a bit of
TLC to get it road worthy again. I was just wondering if anyone can
shed any light on the requirements for this bike when it comes to MOT
time? Obviously it's a glorified push bike with a small engine. It
never had indicator lights, or dippable headlights or anything like
that. Am I right in thinking that it will only require what it
originally had to pass the MOT? It also doesn't have a horn now,
although I think it did originally. How would I go about fitting one
    of these please?

I hope someone can point me in the right direction!

    Thanks,

    Graham

    Yes, basically.
You can't get away with a rubber bulb any more, unless the bike had
one when new. A horn must sound a "continuous tone". So buy a cheap 6v
horn and wire it in or gaffa-tape a compressed air siren to the bars.
    Seriously.

Thanks to all for your help. The web link regarding MOT seems to cover
    most of it.

    All the best. Graham

"A motor bicycle first used before
1 August 1973 may be fitted with a bulb
    horn."

As an aside: the other day we discussed frame/VIN numbers and I said it
was permissible not to have one - apparently the rules have changed and
it's now a requirement. Fortunately for me my friendly MOT man took it
    off the log book.

  5. Ah, thanks. I stand corrected.
Yes, I was sure you needed one.
    Heh.

It's only become a requirement in the last 18 months.

  7. Blimey. Thought it went back longer than that. Well, you live & learn
    etc.

Thus spake TOG@Toil,, () unto the assembled multitudes:
Indeed. I once had a Puch Maxi with twin 'Harry Moss' gas-horns fixed to
the handlebars. They produced a truly awesome blast which came in useful
on several occasions, though I was once chased by an irate bloke in a Mini,
who took exception to my, er, warning signal.

Bicycle shops sell rather neat "pump up" air horns with a water bottle
    like arrangement. Surprisingly loud.
