The number of gophers - motorised scooters which have a maximum speed of 10km/h - is on the increase in Mandurah as more senior citizens move to the area, police say. Sergeant David White said there had been several incidents of people driving gophers across busy roads without looking. The vehicles, which can be driven on the road, also frustrate motorists who get stuck behind them. "You can see where some drivers become impatient, that could cause problems with impatient motorists and that is what we are trying to avoid," Sgt White said. Police will be educating elderly motorists on the road rules in a bid to tackle the problem, he said.
