A thousand kms of twisty roads across the coastal range and the Pyrenees
starting/ending in my city and no motorways: Yes, and I'd repeat.

Do they still hold the Circuit des Pyrenees?

A pity we don't have something like the 'Dark Dog' in the UK.

"The inaugural event took place from Squires Cafe Nr Leeds on Saturday
20th June 2009. The 1000 miles covered either a Northern Route into
Scotland or a Southern Route to take in the West Country. In total the
event had 171 finishers which 162 riders and 9 pillions, which would
have smashed the world record if the Americans hadn't pipped us to the
post first. However the event did break both the European and UK
records and so far has raised over £33,000 for the Poppy Appeal."

let's assume approx. 40mpg here (possibly optimistic). So that's
~20K's worth of petrol bought to raise £33K. And **** the carbon
    emissions.

**** "sponsorship"; if you want to donate money to charity, just do
    it.

The route through Jockland looks more interesting. How infested is
Scotland with speed cameras, these days?

Unfortunately never heard of it, the Pyrenees are a cultural barrier.

Dark dog sounds a great idea, but open road racing is not kosher in
Spain. Mate of mine who raced the IOMTT did so with a French license.

    Marginally.

HM's South - Squires: 200 miles of motorway hell
Squires - Perth: Another 250 miles of motorway hell
Perth - Inverness: a speeding ban waiting to happen
Inverness - Wick - Inverness - Glasgow: it'll piss down the whole way
Glasgow - Squires: Yet another 250 miles of motorway hell.
Squires - HM's South: 200 more miles of motorway hell.

A sponsored root canal surgery would be more enticing.

Seems more about involvement rather than a way to raise loads of cash.

Can't be any worse than the Edinburgh Royal Hospital for Sick children
which claims to have spent £500,000 to raise £60,000.

    In communiqué

It was a sort of rally for bikes. IIRC only police could take part and
there were teams from different countries. They used the hardest passes,
some of which were not tarmac surfaced. The rider of a Triumph Tiger
    Trail won it in 1981.
Strictly speaking they don't race on the roads, but from what I am told
they have to press on well to keep on schedule. Special 'stages' at
circuits and closed hill climbs. So essentially road legal bikes not
racers. Amazingly a Vozan VX10 won a class in it last year - and yes
there were other seemingly 'better' bikes entered.

    Good video on this page:

I was 'opin' you'd turn up.

As an alternative, how about a bash at the non-stop motorcycling world
    record?

I was looking at this yesyerday:

    http://www.lpmcc.net/activity/event_gwr_4.htm

Set in 1972 on a Notrun Commando, three LPMCC members rode around
Cadwell Park for just over 24 hours - and the motorcycle /never
stopped/ in that time. Sounds like a challenge that uk.r.m could be
    equal to - whaddya think?

Sounds like Maudes Trophy territory. Long overdue for winner by the look
    of it:

why ask for details? It's easier simply to disbelieve it - I mean, for
a start, a Commando running for over 1000 miles without breaking down?

    Come on...

    No *really*

1000 miles. But then it's ready for the scrap heap.

  20. Put me down as crew.
Not to mention the likelihood of needing to stop at some point.
    That was my guess.
That sounds more likely to end up in comedy disaster.
    Could be.
