RC45 Crash Donuts...

Discussion in 'Bay Area Bikers' started by Larry xlax Lovisone, Sep 15, 2004.

  1. You buy Crash Donuts because they will sacrifice themselves in order to
spare your bike... but wait... what if no company makes a set for your
    particular bike... what then???

Well you go it alone and machine your own... but wait... what if Honda
didn't design a spot to hang a donut... what then???

Well you scratch your noggin until a novel idea strikes... behold screw
    on Delrin Crash Donuts...

    Is it marketable or not???

You mean you didn't want to bore holes through your fairings? :)

Any pics of what's behind there?

The thought of fabbing up a set for the Busa crossed my mind but then
I found Bike Design already made a set.
    http://ww2.netnitco.net/users/vairxprt/sliders.htm

Little pricey but I like the way they fit and think they should do ok
in a parking lot tip over or low side. They seem pretty strong and
are only about an inch lower than a standard "cut up your fairing
    set".

Larry, how are those different that what you had on there before? And yes,
they are marketable. As soon as I find an RC in my garage, I'll roll by the
Busy Little Shop to order up a pair. Hell, I might even order two pair just
    to keep you busy.

By the way, the Whale is a very happy machine. Just a little fine tuning in
the jetting department and it will be perfect! Time to stop working on the
bike and to begin working on the rider. I'm greased lightning fast, but
only when I ride with Shane. HAHAHAHA

  9. Indeed the engine mounts bolts do line up with the fairing vents and so
    no brackets are needed...

  10. Aluminum shaft is 3/4 of an inch diameter 7075 T6... I think it's strong
enough but I'll let you know for sure after I have the misfortune of
    testing them myself...

  11. The aluminum part is new along with the Delrin threads... but I have a
new and improve version already worked up in my head...

In most circles, they are known as frame sliders.

Given that pavement is the most likely thing you'd impact with, I'd
say they look strong enough. On soft surfaces, the bike would probably
tumble and disintigrate anyway -- depending on how fast you were
going, of course. The main prupose of sliders is to keep the frame
from being totaled in the case of a low-side.

The frame sliders on both of my bikes were purchased through LP and
ran about $50 a set. My 600 required no body mods, but my 750 did
(bolting on at the top motor mounts).

    Nice job, by the way.

DFR... never heard of 'em. I'll have to check out the link. Thanks for the
scoop! Is DTP still around? I used to see them at Lohman's Plaza all the
time when I lived around the corner...

  15. Perhaps there is the answer to the marketability question. In today's
litigious society, it may be unwise to market such a product without
adequate testing to prove that the intended functionality is provided
    without adding unexpected hazards.
