They were outclassed as soon as Elsies hit the scene and should only
be remembered in the same way that BSA Bantams were remembered in the
    late 70's.

Does that mean when I was riding my D7 in 1982 I was actually quite
    cool? Or not?

    Quite. Much too modern.

The one I'm getting bits together for is mostly 77 years old.

Yebbut, they had character. Maybe not good character, and maybe not
reliable sometimes, but I could still probably wire-up a Jampot Matchbox
blindfold, and I once stripped (engine too), cleaned down, painted,
reassembled a Douglas in less than 24 hours, then rode it from
Hornchurch to Abingdon for an interview.

OK, Top whack of 75 mph wasn't exactly good for a 350 even then, but
    Hell! I want another one!

Ah yes, I had a D1 known as 'Woooorrrrrrrrrrr."

You poked the kickstart, and it fired: pop-pop-pop-Woooorrrrrrrr - and died.

I suspect that asking means you already know the answer. Sorry.

I wonder how much of that is to do with the contrast with the mopeds
most of us had before getting on an RD. I suspect most people would be
a bit underwhelmed after getting used to big modern 4Ts.

By contrast, my Fantic makes 43bhp & weighs around 104Kgs - somewhat
more impressive than an RD400. That still makes me grin like a loon
when it gets on the pipe (and scream in terror when I need some brakes)
    :)

Local bike shop has one same colour as yours, mint wiv an titanium
akrapovitch for 6750. I very *very* nearly made a terrible mistake on
    Saturday.

Fortunately I wrote Mr IR&E his annual cheque last Friday. Had I left it
to the last minute (today) as per usual it might be a horribly different
story. Sure, I know I couldn't live with the riding position for more
than an hour, but I had looked closely at the top yolk. It was obvious
that WUN's CNC mill could run up a streetfighter conversion in 45
    minutes.

Also my RD400 promises to suck up all available cash this year.

Anyone want to buy a rather nice and radical B12 and a low miles XS650?

I doubt he could face a ride as demanding as Belfast to reclaim the XS
