Rear Wheel Noise?

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Broadband Campaigner, Apr 15, 2004.

  1. Hi

This may sound like I am hearing things, but I don't think I am.

I have a 2001XXY Blackbird. I roll the bike out of the garage each day,
recently I have started to hear noise from either the rear wheel, sprocket
or chain, I don't know which. It is a click that is linear to how slow or
fast I push or ride the bike.

It is only a very subtle noise and barely audible over the engine

It may have been there before and I have just not noticed it.....but.....

    Any ideas?

Stiff link in the chain? Happened on my last bike and sounded like a
    clicking noise when riding.

When you say linear - long or short delay? Long delay (IYSWIM) would
be a stiff link in the chain. Short delay would be more likely a
chipped sprocket tooth or perhaps several stiff links.
Try wheeling the bike with the engine off and you might get a better
idea. Yet better, stick the bike on a paddock stand and rotate the
wheel by hand and you may well be able to see what is causing the
    noise.

By the way, we post at the bottom here - below the text to which we
are replying - having snipped irrelevant text and signatures.

    I thank you.

I have the same bike and had exactly the same problem. What I couldn't do
was fix it. However, even though I didn't fix it (until I changed the
chain), I managed to dramatically reduce the noise through careful use of
    WD-40 and copious chain lube.

    Hope that helps a bit..

Have you checked the wheel in case theres a nail etc in the tyre?

Yeah, I found exactly all that for the same noises on my FJ too. DID
chain fitted as well. All the lubrication and twiddling with pliers
hasn't cured it though, so it goes in for a new chain and sprockets on
    Saturday.

Yes, that's what I get too, at high speeds it's completely gone.
