Rebuild tips please

I've just about got all the bits and pieces to rebuild my Z650 engine and
started meself thinkin like...
I'm using a used (within service limits) crankshaft and new bearings. Should
I do anything to the journals? Rough em up a smidge with scotchbrite in oil
or something? Don't laugh... I've only ever rebuilt 2 strokes before.
Any other tips would be most helpful (don't be bleedin obvious, I know I
have to oil things and keep crap from getting in there)

Why, FFS?

I'd just make sure everthing was spotlessly clean and lubed with
assembly lube, or at least good engine oil.

You might want to Plastigage the bearing clearances before buttoning
everything up.

afterwards? Don't forget that not everyone has your /many/ years of

Of course. Rough yer journals up, mate. Use an angle grinder fitted
with a Stone Grinding Disc, that'll give just the perfect roughness
which will encourage the oil across the journals by capillary action
and allow them to bed in perfectly.

Don't listen to that Champ ****, he can't even scrub in a new front
tyre.

Well, yeah, but even so, asking if you should take nice shiny smooth
bearings out of an engine and then scratch them is not the sort of
action that requires "years of knowledge" to determine as utterly daft.

The answer is he is prepared to open his mind to new experiences, have a go
and seek the council of others more experienced than himself.

No experience of Z650, however it is no problem having too smooth a surface
on a rotary bearing, as long as there is a good supply of clean oil the
bearing surface will ride on a film of oil. However on a sliding bearing
that is not able to get a good supply of oil such as piston rings on the
piston bore, a slightly rougher surface is used to help retain a small
amount of oil, useful particularly at start up. It is common practice to
rough a glazed bore by honing (not scotchbrite) this keeps the precision of
the bore intact but leaves a surface that will retain a certain amount of
oil.

General tips you could observer
Buy a manual, Haynes ones are good starting point and can be picked up cheap
on ebay.
Keep everything spotlessly clean, a dish washer can be useful but not on
boil and not on rubber seals or plastic, blow of with compressed air and
lightly spray with WD40 and keep in Tesco sandwich bags or larger parts in
black bin bags until ready for assembly.
By the way if you don't have a compressor, I have seen some people rig up
something of the spare wheel of a car, surprising how much air they will
hold and just nip down the petrol station to refill.
Make sure all oilways are clear, squirt some oil through them if you can
with an oil can
Good strong well lit work bench, tape some clean cardboard to the bench top.
When each part is ready to be assembled, lightly smear with the same oil you
are going to use when running.
If in doubt ask because the more you know the more you realise that you
don't know.

silly and *then* asked.
