Reccomend a home accounts software package?

Just to try and fill up some empty space, what is the home accounting
software of choice? Quicken and MS Money have both had UK support
dropped although I can get hooky copies of the USA varieties.

There are others, but are they any good? Which ones should I avoid?
Yes, I could spend ages with excel but my skills in that direction are
limited and a quill and parchment is so 17th century.

Any advice for a poor lurker?

    Thanks.

"On October 30, 2009, Microsoft will transfer customer support for
Office Accounting in the UK to Mamut Software Ltd. Mamut is a
long-standing industry partner of Microsoft’s in the UK and Europe and
is a leading supplier of integrated software solutions. "

So not dropped as such, more transferred.

I'm still using Quicken, but I had a look recently at what was around
and bookmarked the following as worth a second look.

Glad I'm not the only one! I've tried a few others just out of
interest, but always come back to Quicken after a few days.

Yes, transferred to a different software that you have to pay for (quite
    expensive) after the first year.

    Seconded.

I normally use the Portable Apps version (2.2.8) on a usb stick for
Windows. Can also edit the same accounts on different platforms, I've
tried it on Linux (version 2.2.6 on Ubuntu 9.04) and if you're an Apple
fan boi there's a Mac OS X version too.

If you need any tips on setting it up I can probably help. Although I'm
not an accountant I helped develop interactive teaching software for
double entry book-keeping in my dim and distant past.

After the first year? The MS site says...

    U.K. version only.
    Download size: 287MB
    Requirements: Windows XP/2003 Server/Vista
License: FREE. Absolutely no strings attached.

I'll read the T&C's when I can be bothered.

Do you have a UK version of Quicken then? I can only find / buy USA
ones. Or have you done some sort of tweaking with it.

Amazing what one can do when one can be bothered! Now to see if I can
    get it legally licenced.

    Used this for years

I even went to a lot of trouble to gt it working under Solaris using Wine.

Only stopped when I realised I was being a total saddo.

Only that I can't buy a licence for the UK product any more. Of course
there's the hookey version, but I'm TRYING to be good.

You made me look. 2004 XG versions for sale at 22 quid. Looked up the
reviews and they stink for this one. I've downloaded the 2002 version
which has a 60 day trial, so I need to start hunting for a crack.
