Right, I'm looking at filling the empty space in the garage where my Trophy used to sit. I rather fancy a Trumpet Daytona. I know naff all about them and I can't even find the difference between a 955 & 955i on google. I guess the "i" bit prolly means injected. Which I would prefer over carbs nowadays. Budget around 2 grand, and it will be used as the "all round" bike. I have a bad back, so maybe looking at a layee down sort of racing bike is not really sensible, but I do believe the bars can be shifted a tad so as it's not too a radical position. I'm asking for sensible suggestion or recommendations of bikes that you might think fit the bill for an old fart, (just the wrong side of 'arf a century, on 'alloween!) that is not too radical a sports position when riding. I had an early Trophy 12 ('91 model) and the standard bars were a little too low for my liking, but I changed them to the more upright ones and it was terrific. Best Trophy made IMHO I'd appreciate the words of the experienced chaps & chap-eses that reside in this Parish. TIA -- Greybeard FLHR -03 UK (95 cu-in Stg 2. Big Boy 2!) @registered.motzarella.org: All 955cc bikes are "i" - early Daytonas were called T595 but used the same engine http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triumph_Daytona_955i Other bikes in the 2k price bracket to consider: VFR750 Thunderace ZZR1100 BMW R1100S
They were all injected, right from 1997. Daytonas do have a rather stretched out riding position for me, but I'm a short-arse. It can be overcome for about 250 quid by investing in some gorgeous lookng Gilles Vario-Bars with the height extenders. The footrest position is perfect for me and the over all feel of the bike is more sports-tourer than sports, but the engine does let the bike become deceptively fast when wound up. The triple engines are just sublimely smooth and grunty...and the noise.... For 2 grand you'll get an earlier model, the T595 or an early 955i. Both are as good as the other, but the later bikes have higher power output from 2003 onwards. Some people prefer the look of the T595 shape, but to me it look like a bastardised early SV650. I was more taken with the post 2003 shape with the triangular headlights, YMMV. 2002 models have a twin sided swingarm and single large headlight - they look odd for a Daytona and aren't that popular for this reason. Compared to other sport/touring bikes of the era they look fine, but not Triumphy enough for the Hinckley purists. My old Daytona was a lovely bike, I certainly don't ever regret buying mine.
I'll have a '96 Trumpet Tiger 900 for sale soon. That is, as soon as I get the carbs (yes, this is the last of the non-FI models) flushed-out, the front NS indicator working, put the bodywork back on and get is down to the local MOT centre for a ticket. It's just been treated to brand new rims and spokes, as it fell foul of what I now know to be a common problem of "rim-cracking", plus a new rear disc and pads, and calliper re-builds all round. It comes with a Scott oiler and Baglux harness and bag - in Blue though the bike is Red - and a spare set of hardly used tyres. Sounds like the perfect match for your requirements and would give you £800 change from your 2 grand budget. Let me know if you'd like to see it as it stands. Basildon (Essex) area.
It isn't you know - that honour goes to the '98 with Keihin carbs. It's not Ian Champ's old bike is it? -- Krusty www.MuddyStuff.co.uk Off-Road Classifieds '02 MV Senna '03 Tiger 955i '96 Tiger '79 Fantic Hiro 250

Looks in fantastic nick. What's the mileage? I'd bite yer hand off at that price if I wasn't already Tiger'd up. -- Krusty www.MuddyStuff.co.uk Off-Road Classifieds '02 MV Senna '03 Tiger 955i '96 Tiger '79 Fantic Hiro 250
Didn't think to look there! Doh ) Thanks I'll pass on the BeeEm and the Kwak, thanks. The VFR always gets a good right up. -- Greybeard FLHR -03 UK (95 cu-in Stg 2. Big Boy 2!) Garmin Zumo 550, To get me home! ukrm@foxtails[dot]co[dot]uk
yes, you can find a t595 or 955i for that sort of money. didn't seem too radical a position to me. if you want to put aftermarket bars on it i recommend you talk to a triumph dealer first. alternatively it might be better to go for a sprint or a speed triple. i had one, but i didn't keep it that long as the rear wheel had an unnerving habit of stepping out a bit when leant over, and the tank had two nasty edges that cut into my groin sharply under heavy braking - i put this down to them being designed for fat cunts with a lot of ballast and wide pelvises. the engine was great, but other things that pissed me off about it were (1) you had to have the sidestand up to start it, and (2) the headlights were shite.
Thanks for the good review. I'll probably wait a few weeks then and throw a few more pennies in the pot and look for a 2002-3 model. I must admit, I prefer the looks of the later edition, but it has the DSSA, is this much of a backward step? I like the idea of the SSSA as it's easier to hoik the wheel out ;o) -- Greybeard FLHR -03 UK (95 cu-in Stg 2. Big Boy 2!) Garmin Zumo 550, To get me home! ukrm@foxtails[dot]co[dot]uk
Sorry mate, the Tiger is the one Triumph bike I really don't like the look of. Also, when I sat on one I felt a little short in the leg department. -- Greybeard FLHR -03 UK (95 cu-in Stg 2. Big Boy 2!) Garmin Zumo 550, To get me home! ukrm@foxtails[dot]co[dot]uk
I've had a couple of old BMW's and were very happy with them (K100's & K75's). Looking for something a little more sporty at the moment. When I worked in the bike shop, oh a zillion years ago, Kwacks were a bloody nightmare! I really have a serious hatred of the things. And that colour green! WTF! No sorry, as good as they may well be now, I seriously doubt I could throw a leg over one without breaking into convulsions! ) -- Greybeard FLHR -03 UK (95 cu-in Stg 2. Big Boy 2!) The sidestand issue wouldn't be a problem. I'm sure a quick tweak with a spanner or scothlock could sort that. Headlights bad? which year? I'll be looking at shoving in a couple of HID's if I can find the room. -- Greybeard FLHR -03 UK (95 cu-in Stg 2. Big Boy 2!) Garmin Zumo 550, To get me home! ukrm@foxtails[dot]co[dot]uk
I nearly fit it perfectly, but refused to be baited and rose above the comment ;-p I don't have a wide pelvis! -- Greybeard FLHR -03 UK (95 cu-in Stg 2. Big Boy 2!) Garmin Zumo 550, To get me home! ukrm@foxtails[dot]co[dot]uk
i think it was 1999. i defer to tim@osvif's superior knowledge however, although not to his taste (the t595 design with the single sided swing arm being much more pleasing to my eye than the later *yawn* model).
Jack Lilley do a handlebar conversion that points the bars ever so slightly upwards (and cheaper than original bars too). I had these on my T595. I aint a fat **** or have a wide pelvis so it seems like it was just you. I've had both the T595 and the last daytona. if I had to chose again I'd pick the 595 every day of the week. you might prefer to get one of the early 955i versions as its essentially the same bike, just make sure its the SSSA version. -- Adie (replace spam with nickname to reply) UKRM FAQ: http://www.ukrm.net/faq/ keeper of the ukrm faq for my sins YZF-R1 : ZX9R E1 : GPz 750 turbo MRO#11 BOTAFOF#7 BOTAFOT#130 DIAABTCOD#17 MIB#24 YTC#16 BOB#15 ex-UKRMMA#22 BOMB#11
