Anyone know a good way to temporarily quieten a muffler?

    It's a slip-on job on a 4 into 1. Got to get it past a roadworthy
and VicRoads inspection. I've heard a bit of steel wool packed
into the can will quieten it for a while until it burns out.

  2. Shady money-making scheme #4378:

-Begin collecting stock exhaust systems for all manner of bikes and rent
them out to people at $20 per rego inspection, $5 surcharge if they can't be
bothered doing the swap themselves for muffler only, $30 for a full system.
Hang on to their loud exhaust as security.

  4. In time... at the moment, I can do you a swish set of leathers for $800,
    though...

  5. Hmmm, I must visit shady bike shops, and they charge way more than that
(of course most of that is 'waiting at the RTA for you' labour)!

Sounds good to me! $25 is a bargain compared to the $70-odd that a nice bike shop would charge.

Are you considering expanding into country NSW any time soon? :)

You're about 6 months too late on that offer - I'm a poor uni student now, remember? :)

What worked for me was to remove the muffler and make a ball out of
steelwool wrap it in small mesh wire like chicken wire to hold it together,
then stuff it in the muffler just behind the join.

Don't do it from the rear of the muffler as they will spot it.

Cool. I'll be able to get a new system in a few months. Just need
something to get me by so I can get it regged and not attract too
    many coppers.

I quietened my old RD350 with Chux Super-Wipes wrapped around the baffles
    (Bassani 'chambers).
One day it backfired and blew a flaming, smoking Chux-covered baffle about
    50' through an intersection!
    It looked very impressive!

Reminds me of the time when I was riding one of the early Honda trailies and the
RTA (or whatever it was back in about 1970) guy didn't think the rear mudguard
came down far enough. Said it had to be level with the axel. So he sent me to
get it fixed up. The fact that the bike had the original guard, was already
registered, and this was only a renewal didn't matter to him.

So I went to the bike shop, Fred (the guy at the bike shop, not F.Gassit),
chucked me a bit of tractor tube rubber with a bolt in the top to fix it to the
muddguard. "Bring this back to me when you finish", he said.

And with this legal bit of stuff hanging down to axel level I went back for the
inspection. The RTA guy was stroppy and said something about "I suppose you're
going to take this back to the shop as soon as I pass the bike" or something
similar. Ever notice how some people are not suited to public employment?

He passed the bike, I took the mudflap back to the shop, Fred kept selling bikes
    to me. Another happy customer.

The mesh is probably a good idea ... a mate stuffed a few of those
big steel wool balls down the pipe of his Cagiva when it developed
some holes on the way to Melbourne (and the fussy police at the GP)

All looked and sounded okay until long loops of steel wool
started wriggling out the end of the can ...

I made a tube out of some snake wire I had lying around then
shaped a piece to be an end cap for the tube and wired the joins
together so I have a tube that's open at one end.

Then I shoved a couple of big steel wool balls into it and stuck it in the
can with the wired up end pointing to the rear of the bike.

It's sitting right at the join between the header pipe and the can. Poking
halfway into each. Shouldn't go anywhere as the can narrows a few inches in
and the header widens a few inches before the end. It can't slide forward or back.
Has made a little difference. It's still a tad loud but it's not as harsh. Probably
could use one or two more though.

  15. They could... but I'd only be doing it because I used to have a Volvo, too.

He's lucky; "steel" wool is flammable[1]. I recommend "stainless" steel
    wool.

You might try the stainless open weave ones , I had some success with
those and they do last well

Yeah, yeah, that stuff. Thus the long loops. Not the fuzzy,
steelo stuff which will indeed burn out very quickly. I'm
old enough to have grown up with chemistry sets, you know!
    Astounding link.
