reg/rec - alternatives?

Thanks to J5 for the tip on the R1 reg/rec...but do you know what year
I should be looking for? The one on the website will definitely fit my
    bike (95 CBR600), but I've seen R1 reg/recs for the 04-06 models which
    are totally different.

Are there any other suitable alternatives? In particular, are there
any decent reg/recs by Honda that would fit? And the all important
question: just what is a good price, for new or second-hand?

The old one is well toasted! Keep the revs below 4000ish, and the
voltage is within normal acceptable limits. Rev it beyond 4000, and
watch the voltage just keep on climbing...so no rides for me until
    it's replaced. :-(

Looks like it's all sorted now anyway! Just found a new genuine Honda
reg/rec, the updated replacement part which actually has a proper
heatsink, for $115 including postage from Germany through eBay. Given
the prices for new that I've seen start at around $200 and go up, I
figured that was an absolute bargain. Probably could have got used for
less, but I'm more than happy with that price for new! Thanks again
    for previous advice, much appreciated.

A Honda reg/rec which won't overheat? Must be a counterfeit.

  5. Hi Damien,

I hate to pour cold water on all this, but I'm afraid that the updated
reg/rec's still aren't much chop. A mate of mine has a VFR400 that eats
rectifiers. After his last one went, he vowed to fix it properly. First
up he had the stator rewound to be sure it wasn't causing the rec to
blow. He then found one of the updated reg/recs, and actually paid full
price for the thing. He proceeded to mount the back side of it (the
side without the fins) to a copper Xeon CPU heatsink, complete with fan
and ducting shroud. This whole contraption was relocated towards the
front of the bike to be in cool airflow, instead of bolted onto the
    already hot subframe.

That was about 9 months ago now. The bike died again last week. So,
with all the above effort, he managed to score an extra 3 months or so
out of it, compared to the old ones in the stock mounting spot.

Maybe he just got a bad one? Maybe yours will last much longer? I had a
Firestorm for a couple of years as our daily transport, and never once
had an issue with the reg/rec on it, which I believe to be the same
unit (although I never checked, since I never had a problem with it).

Anyway, having said all that, I hope you did get a good one, and it
lasts a bit longer. It's too expensive a piece of equipment to keep
having to replace. As for me, I gave up on this dodgy Japanese
equipment, and bought me a good quality, reliable, dependable, low
    maintainence British bike.

    Thanks!
    Matto :)
