Right, the poor old CBX is still not charging. The voltage drops while
    the engine's running?

    Reg/rec?

Is see M&P do CBX reg/rec units for £60, and as I'm in there ordering
a skip full of bits[1] for the Wing, I wondered if it was worth
    lobbing one into the basket.

    Are they simple to fit?

[1] Plugs and air/oil filters, to go with the new cambelts and new
clutch centre plate[2] that are already in the garage.

[2] I'm now *convinced* this is the root of the problem. Mainly cos
everything else has been replaced. :)

<touches wood, crosses fingers, twirls rabbit foot>

The Wing doesn't need one, the CBX does.

GoldWing Cambelt replacement looks good for a few lines, thobut; as
does going back into the hell that is the clutch.

Ahah. I mis-read. That'll be easy. Apart from the corroded nuts, the
shonky wiring and the powdered connectors, obviously.
Good-oh. If you could have something posted by Boxing Day, that'd be
handy. I've not got anything else scheduled for then.

    Ah, righty-ho.
Seems a good way as any to spend two compulsory days off. It'll have
to be before then, as the fourth Test starts Boxing Day morning, and I
won't want to miss a minute of such a nail-biting contest.

  7. And then the discovery that it's actually the alternator, which costs
    £££££s.

The testing bit in the manual looks well odd ...

    1. connect two 12v batteries in series.
    2. connect a variable (0-100 ohm) resistor across the battery with a
    50 ohm resistor in between.
    3. test lamp must go out when voltage reaches 14-15v using the
    variable resistor.

    What a palaver!

Later, when it says "reverse direction" - does that mean just swap
    over the voltmeter connections?

    5-40 ohm one-way, >2000 the other

Rectifiers use diodes. Yer basic alternator produces alternating current,
which has to be rectified to give direct current. Diodes allow current to
flow only in one direction, which is what you're testing for.

£20 a set from Silvers. Already here.

Should be three bolts, and two screws to fit them.

    Except.

You can't get the alternator cover off without removing the crash
    bars.

    Bum.

I'd open the bag now, if I were you.

The third (of three) bolts holding on the alternator cover has been
    bodged.

Instead of an 8mm headed bolt threaded into the case, it's now a 10mm
headed item that goes through the cases, into two manky old bits of
sleeving, with a nut on the end.

    Right under carburettor #2.

Of course, when attempting to undo the bolt, the nut goes round and
round. I can't stop it with fingertips, and have no tools available to
fit in a gap that narrow.

    Oh, fiddlesticks.

Do CBX carbs come off one at a time, or all at once?

    Yes, I thought so.

Have a nip up Clerkenwell and look in a few shop windows for ex medical

I went to Halfords. And spent money. To no benefit.

    The alternator is off.

    It gets worse.
