    It's back on.
    It got better.

    In summary, I rock. Go me.



    The bent-nosed pliers didn't work; the narrow nosed molegrips didn't
    reach.

    Old Suzuki 10mm spanners don't bend, they snap.

    The cutting wheel on my PikeyDremel cut the head off.[1]

    It then realised that I should have undone the *other* three 8mm
    bolts.

    Which I then did.

    The brushes were worn to stubs, and had the wires had snapped off the
    mounting plates. New ones fitted easily.

    Reassembled alternator, moly-greased the alternator clutch, and went
    to refit it. Did I have a new bolt that was long enough to repeat the
    bodge?

    Yes. One. An allen bolt. With a mashed thread.

    Good job I'd recently acquired a tap and die set, then. :)

    Refitted, it started on the button, and shows a healthy-ish 13v on the
    voltmeter. Previously 11v and dropping.

    Apparently they take a few miles to bed-in, and CBX voltmeters are not
    as reliable as they should be.

    Then it got worse again, as a I noticed three bolts missing from the
    header clamps. Something for next week, I think.

    [1] I presume smoke from the motor housing is not exactly a *good*
    thing.
