Don't know what you were thinking of, but I was referring to her
skling activities only. She seemed to quite enjoy going up ski lifts
and pointing the planky things downwards. I'd be asking myself whether
it's just that she doesn't want to do these things with you...

You are not thinking of taking a passenger though. Not sure if I would, the
boxer is fine solo but I've ridden hundreds of miles on ice and snow two up
with luggage and it was trying.

Ah I wondered as I've not seen many K outfits. The frame design may not be
    friendly either.
What it has knobblies, 100bhp and a pillion seat?

I think the 100 or 75 would be ideal as a tug for a sidecar... but
they're getting a bit old and suffering from electrical gremlins. I
suspect a reloom would fix most problems though...

    *sigh* I sound like Timo.

what I didn't like about the ski lifts were the ones I fell off and it
dumped me having to wade through several feet of snow to get to the
    bit to ski down.

Most skiers dream of snow like that. It can still catch out the
unwary, mind. I remember a couple of years back skiing with Champ when
we tried to get across a perfect powder field that was, unfortunately,
too flat and too soft&deep. Took us about fifteen minutes of hard slog
    to walk the 100m out :-}

    Sound like sage words.
Just one problem, studded tyres on the 1400 miles of non icy road.

I've ridden through Switzerland 2 up on gritted snow and ice and often from
Thurso to Perth on the same on an R100. The first time in Scotland was an
adventure. The rest were a royal PITA.

I "made" a studded tyre for my TS250 which I rode along North coast roads to
work. It's fine on snow but on plain tarmac terrible.

That's handy - not far to go for a bit of summer glacier skiing if you
    move to Sproutland.

Going up mountains using axes and crampons rather than a ski lift and
coming back down them by either abseiling or using an ice axe to slow
    you down.

I don't think it's the person as much as the activity.

Bloody silly idea. What'd you want to do that for?
Well, there's perhaps something about the sort of person that would
    want to do that activity...

Coming down a big snow slope on a fertiliser bag using an ice axe as a brake
    is *rather* good fun.

Yeah, London used to get socked in by fog so thick you couldn't see
your hand in front of your face years ago - things have moved on and
global warming is our best friend. It'll be a bit cold but the roads
will be clear unless we get a sudden dump of heavy snow and if that
happens then I'll find a bar to get pissed in and go back the year
    after to do the rally.
Why the **** would anyone even consider studded tyres for Germany in
January 2008? It's not going to be that cold and road gritting has
spread far enough east for icy roads not to be a major issue. Once we
hit the camp site the routes into the site might get a bit dodgy but
just fucking leave the bike near the entrance and walk the rest.

The night time temperatures might well drop below freezing but it's
not as if any of us going are skint and can't afford a decent sleeping
bag. We'll be going in a group so anyone struggling to get their bike
to their tent pitch will have plenty of back up if they fall off and
all you really need is a bit of ply to put under your stand to stop
the bike falling over. If I really believed that studded tyres were
the only way to get there without crashing I wouldn't be going.

I didn't suggest studded tyres! someone mentioned them and I recounted
trying to make one up for a place where the 20 miles to work was often
    uncleared roads.

IIRC the studs were taken from a cage snow tyre, looked like titanium. It
was a single front tyre... for a Reliant. Apparently they follow ice ruts
    like nothing else!
