YOu are that far away from the one under the VC pub then? Lucky you.

Try some of the Brown Bros if you want sweet, delicious, and very little
    alcohol.
Boggle! Your office doesn't have an esspresso machine in the staff kitchen?
    No wonder you get grumpy.

    Theo
started an office junior today. Now I've got to teach her how to make
    coffee.

If you're talking single malt Irish whiskey, the expensive stuff is
    rather nice.

<chuckle> Yeah he was indeed - but at the moment anything with wheels
is good, he's not real fussy yet...

(but I'm not a brand snob, I'm a performance snob, if it doesn't go
well for what it is then it's not worth it)

The only redeeming feature which wine has over coffee is that people can
consume wine without polluting the air with the putrid stench that
lingers around coffee and coffee drinkers.

Ahh grasshopper. If I pay $5 for a bottle of wine that retails for $20, is
    it a $5 bottle or a $20 bottle that I bought?
Certainly. I wouldn't pretend to be drinking a $50 bottle of wine, even if
    the cost is virtual.
Yes, but I only paid for the half-hour, so my time is up.
I did get an invite to Gina Rhinehart's party, but unfortunately I was away
    that weekend.
(Gina is Lang Hancock's daughter and worth a very large pile of money. We
managed to save the house on a property of hers in the shire, and she
invited the brigade to a cocktail party she was having).

    I don't know about wine but I just bought a carpet from a carpet-warehouse
where the buyer had gone crazy and accidentally overstocked and they were
having to discount the genuine handmade Persian rugs by up to 80%!
    Sheesh; what incredible luck eh?

That's flatulence, or poorly brewed coffee, Nev. "well made coffee" has
nothing putrid, or stenchy about it.

Yes, but JL seems to think a $5 bottle is rubbish. He says (probably
correctly) that my wine retails for $20-$25.
    I hold that if I paid $5 it's a $5 bottle of wine.

To you, yes. To the retailer it's a 75-80% off sale ..

But yes if you pay $5 for a bottle of wine, it's a $5 bottle of wine.

Maybe JL should've added 'retail price' for all us pedants out there.

<shrug> as you well know and are carefully nitpicking around, the RRP
is just a convenient shorthand for "wine of this quality set" noting
that I already said that thanks to the marketing types some crap gets
boosted up into the more expensive set, but it's very rare for the
good stuff to end up in the cheap bracket (mates rates at cost price
    being the obvious exception).

Would you prefer I started referring in terms of rating points ? It
just makes it more complicated but if it makes you happy ?

<shrug> It's a bottle that rates N out of 100 (lets say 90 for the
sake of argument),that's constant it's RRP is say $20 but you bought
it at manufacturing cost of $5. It's still the same bottle of wine the
fact that you got it for a quarter of what the rest of us poor
bastards pay is beside the point. The RRP is just a convenient (albeit
somewhat imprecise - Hammo would be loving this discussion) shorthand
for a quality range. Thanks to the marketing types not everything that
retails for >$25 is above 90/100 rating, but sure as hell very few
that sell for under 15 will rate above 90...

    JL
(and as discussed those many times with Hammo, whether the thermometer
reading -8C is precisely accurate or not, it's a good rule of thumb
reading that says "it's bloody cold" same same for the above)

Hmm the one on Miller near the corner of McLaren *might* have been OK
(not the one on the actual south east corner thats below road level
its woeful, the one near the south west corner a door or two down)
only been once and that was a year ago so memory is fuzzy but I seem
to recall it was drinkable. Worth a try.

Ahh, yes and another worth a try, is owned by the same guy as my
second favourite in the city (behind Mecca of course). Elizabeth
Plaza. Directly underneath fitness first and the walkbridge over the
    pacific highway.
