Removing paint from an Ally frame

Before I go made with the Nitromors, any reason not to?

It's a CBR400RR-K frame that has black (spray) paint on it.
It's only a very thin coat but it is resisting rubbing it
over with thinners, and I don't want to start with t-cut in
case I end up polishing the frame once through the ally.

    Any other suggestions?

Nice idea except that I don't want to change the surface
finish of the frame, otherwise I would just T-Cut the
paint off. I would have thought a soda blaster would
be a better idea to cause the least amount of damage,
but I could make one of those at home.

  4. Using the patented Mavis Beacon "Hunt&Peck" Technique,
Only if it's a very small frame.

  8. Nitromors is strongly caustic (alkali, IIRC my chemistray).

There's a good chance it may pit or stain the alloy. Ask SWK.

    (The Older Gentleman) wrote in
according to the datasheet it is two solvents, methanol & Methylene
    Chloride aka DCM or Dichloromethane.
    http://www.hex.co.uk/MSDS/loctite/nitromors.pdf

"pH Not measurable" but it does go on to say "the primary component
(methylene chloride) will decompose on red hot surfaces, in electric arcs
or naked flame to evolve predominately hydrochloric acid and a trace amount
    of phosgene gas."

Interesting stuff in wiki, DCM is used in the food industry as a solvent
e.g. to make freeze dried coffee
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methylene_chloride

Nowhere does the above mention damaging metal surfaces. Wiki does say that
DCM has been banned by the EU as a domestic paint remover, although
retailers have a couple of years left to shift existing stock.

I used Nitromors a couple of weeks ago to strip back the flaky paint on
my trusty steed's hangars before attacking the corrosion and then re-
painting. The area's where the corrosion hadn't got to didn't show any
signs of pitting, although I did one side at a time and left the residue
on there for no more than 10 mins in total before washing clean.

Thanks; this would be my approach too. I want to steam
clean the frame anyway, but might as well attack the
paint first then wash it all off at once.

    In communiqué
It got rid of the nasty home painted gold finish on the alloys wheels of
the hill climb Morini without any damage.

That's some sizeable steed. What do you keep in the hangars - a pair
of Sopwith Camels, for nipping out for beer?

    I don't think so

    Bloody gramma(e)r and spelling Nazi's.

I'm Dyslexsic, that's my excuse and I'm sticking with it... it sounds the
same whichever way you spell it anyhow! :p

I know a bloke who keeps his bikes in a hangar at work, along with a
couple of aircraft. No Sopwith Camels though and his name's not Biggles.

Nitromors, IF it's paint and the frame's not anodised or powder coated.

    Well, that worked a treat!

A £4 tin of Nitromors was purchased this morning and
I set about the frame this afternoon. As soon as
I brushed the Nitromors on, the paint was coming
    away!

I managed to get rid of all the paint off the frame
with less than half the tin and in less than an hour
it is now paint-less. All I need to do now is give
it a good clean to get rid of the non-paint grime
and I can then start on the engine.
