Repacking end cans

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Grimley_Feindish, May 22, 2006.

  1. Whats the collective opinion on using something like ordinary Rockwool to
repack a silencer with rather than the fiberglass stuff you can buy? I only
ask because mine need doing and I have some to hand. The proper stuff seems
to vary between a £5 and a £10 per can which seems a lot for a small
    rectangle of fiberglass mat.

If I do go down the official route is there any difference between the cheap
stuff and the not so cheap stuff or is it all just fiberglass?

If you want to get real good at repacking silencers, go ahead
and use ordinary heat insulation. It will self destruct and blow
out quickly so you get lots of practice.

  4. As I found out.
If you want spectacular, use steel wool.

  9. Heh.

I thought it was getting a tad loud. My mate brought his db meter in to work
today to check - 104db at 4500rpm (measured from about 6 foot behind the
    bike).

    I assume that was dB(A).

    Sorry - can't hear you.
Assuming certain simplifications of the calculation, 2 minutes of that
every day and you could be well on the way to noise induced hearing
    loss.

  13. Fucking hell.

    104 decibels???? Sheeeesh....

I'm reminded of the Joe Bar Team cartoon, where the copper's noise-meter
    is blown to smithereens :))

    <thinks>

Any chance of a sound file?

Err... I'll see his 104db, & raise him 117db - at idle. The German
journalist who spent a few days with us on the MV tour last year
described my bike as a 'mobile sound machine' in the article he wrote
    for Motorrad :)

I fitted some baffles this evening, so things should've quietened down
    a tad now.

Is that "WHAT?" as in already hard of hearing, or "WHAT?" as in surprise
    at the above statement?

I claim 114db at tickover for my old 1984 GSX750EFE with Harris F1 full
system and individual K+Ns fitted. This was measured by Bedfordshire
traffic police at the bike show they organised at their HQ in Kempston.

One metre, 45 degree angle, vertically level with the pipes. We did a
distance test once, & the sound faded away at 5 miles as the crow flies.
