Reverse Polarity

I know it seems like jolly good fun, but when jump starting your modern
motorbike with all that electrical wizardry on-board DO NOT reverse the
polarity on the donor vehicle. Just wipe the terminals and make
completely sure you have them the right way round.

Yes yes, having a natty little dongle on your ignition key to hot wire
the solenoid is a wizard jape. It does make you a vastly superior and
enlightened Entity. However when the nice man with the diagnostic
computer tells you the ECU on your ST4S does actually have a fried
circuit, the not at all nice bint at Ducati Leeds gets to snigger like a
fucking mong when she quotes you NINE HUNDRED AND FORTY TWO earth
    pounds.

This has been a Public Service Announcement.

Insurance claim? I was surprised to learn that you can claim for eg
filling a diesel car up with petrol. Not that I know anyone that's ever
    done that.

    "Accidental" innit?

Oh shit. Does nobody make aftermarket ECUs for it?

For that money, I'd buy a cheap ST4S on eBay, take the ECU, and break
    the rest for spares.

Or, possibly, order one from Italy.

    <wince>

Oo's payin' for that one, then?

Either way, I'd be off to a breaker - there must be a Duke breaker
somewhere, and the ECU isn't going to get hurt in a hedge interface, is
it? I suppose you'd need the keys with it though ... and the lockset
    too ....

I inadvertently did the same on the bonneville, fortunately being
somewhat older I just blew the fuse.
Fucking hell what is it a Cray?

Looking around, there do seem to be some about.

    eBay item 160347611438

Not sure if it fits the ST4S, mind. But I'd certainly investigate

Apparently the ST4-S uses the same ECU as a 999, which is the 5.9
    version...

    So, upgrade time. :)

A broad range of Dukes use the IAW 59M however these do not have a
separate EPROM, the unit is programmed internally to the model and has a
different part number. Tried an S4R model, same engine, runs but throws
up errors because some of the coolant sensors are different, and so on.
The 999 would be the wrong injection mappings (different engine innit)

That's the earlier box. Larger. Under seat. EPROM. Newer items are
small and by the battery, the seller is misleading, it never fitted a
    4S.

    The dirty bastards.

    How bout this?

    http://www.protwins.co.uk/Ultimap/ultimap_ecu.html

The 01 model looks to be ST4S specific and might be a cheaper option.

ST4S - like fucking hen's teeth running never mind dead.

www.ecuclinic.com reckons they *might* be able to sort it. £250.
    Similar to Fiat units apparently.

or insco. There's no reason for it not to be covered. No different to
eg. dropping it off the stand.

Well yes you have to weigh it up against potential loss of no claims
etc. Crap I know but a grand is quite a lot of wonga to most folk. Had I
previously know this was possible, I would have claimed for the
aforementioned petrol/diesel incident. It cost us three-anna-half grand
in the end for new pump/injectors yada yada.

Sadly Ultimap stopped trading, the founder went on to do something else,
or I would have had one already just to optimise the fuelling for the
    Termis.

I'm going to call ProTwins tomorrow, they might have some left, as long
as they provide a cash back warranty.

There are a number of ECU repairers around.
A certain person I know had to have his porca 911 fixed for a similar
    reason.
