No, that would be the ride for the World Suicide Day.

The World Suicide *Prevention* Day ride would have to stop just short of
    of the cliff.

Jeeze; that's a nasty stat though!
With all the crap initiatives about reducing the road toll there's ****-all
attention to reducing the 25% higher suicide toll!

Please show some respect for the thousand of people that take their lives
    needlessly per year.
A lot of them take there lives for no reason and Craig Mckenzie (may he rest
in peace) was one of them.

AFAIK (in Vic at least) any road deaths identified as suicide or murder
are not included in the road toll.

My nephew suicided 3 years ago, and a riding friend in the states lost her
husband to the same illness about two weeks ago.

Some of us cope better with a bit of humour.

  10. Au contraire. They all have a reason.

    Why should there be?

I consider that it is a basic human right to decide when one wishes to die.

Yeah; I agree with this too.
I think I'd like to see a proper process though (sort of like in Soylent
Green) where you can calmly and rationally die a "nice" death instead of
the spur-of-the-moment nature of a lot of (especially male) suicides.

I also agree to some extent.........if i was laying in bed and couldnt ride
my dirt bike or road bike I definatly think about ending my life.
But if you are only young like Craig Mckenzie I cant see the point & think I
    never will.

    Agreed, Leon...

I don't think any of us who hasn't been personally touched by suicide can
really truly understand the depths that anybody must be in to feel that a
quick end is preferable to some of the stuff life can offer- and to be able
to ignore completely the knowlege of the effect such an act will have upon
everybody who knows and loves you - how desperately and incurably sad must a
person be to feel that suicide is a Good or Sensible Choice..... ? god, I
find it so sad, and so awfully, pitifully brave - or helpless -- Life really
can be absolute shite sometimes, and I can understand that the effort to
claw your way out of that hole sometimes can be just too much. We shouldn't
judge, because we really don't understand...

Hope your ride is a wonderful success and a fabulous suicide prevention
    consciousness-raiser.

You can't trust the stats though - lots of people who suicide don't leave
notes and I don't know (although I'm sure there are probably 'experts' who
do) how easy it is to distinguish a suicide from an accident.... And I've
heard from psychologists on many occasions that the preferred mode of
suicide for blokes is something quick/violent/certain - road death is right
up there at the top, along with gunshot... hanging is quite popular too
(erk!). Women traditionally choose less violent (and often less certain)
means - overdoses and so on, although I had a friend who slashed her wrists
(the right way) to make sure it worked...and a great aunt who hanged
herself, ostensibly to avoid becoming a "burden" on her family.....
    sheesh....

    betty, thinking there's an
    awful lot more to suicide
    than meets the eye

You say that it's hard to distinguish road accident from intention, but
then you state that road deaths are up the top of the list of ways to
top one's self... So obviously there MUST be some way to distinguish
them. I'm guessing the coronial inquiry outcome is used in the stats..
you can continue to believe there's a widespread conspiracy if you wish.

It usually works fine for the suicide, but the poor bloody train driver

If no note stating intention has been left...

    but
    Yes.

So obviously there MUST be some way to distinguish
Maybe they left a note or had spoken a lot about topping themself, or been
depressed for some time.. If they didn't then perhaps you will never know.
They are the ones I'm talking about.

I'm guessing the coronial inquiry outcome is used in the stats..
I didn't say anything about a conspiracy. Pull your head in.

I lost my nephew to suicide this year and I don't regard humour as being not
    appropriate.

It is a coping mechanism that works well for many people (including myself
    and my sister).
