    Who is it?

"The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency risks becoming "a complete
laughing stock" after it emerged nearly 40% of motorbikes are untaxed,
    MPs have said."

Actually, I thought it was a complete laughing stock anyway.

One of mine is untaxed, but then it's SORNED, wonder if that's where
    they get their figures from.
    well quite

"And, from September, new legislation will allow the police, DVLA and
local authorities to take action against unlicensed vehicles even if
they are not parked on public roads."

    That will make interesting reading.

  4. Sounds fairly sinister on first reading, but if it's only to 'take
action' after a chav has been seen riding his ****-mobile up and down
the pavement then parked up in his garden then I'm all for it. Of
course, the legislation will be mis-applied by some busybodies to allow
confiscation of any bike that's simply not on the register at all, or
un-sorned, you can bet your boots on that.

So long as they're not speeding, what's the problem?

I was wondering exactly the same - I've certainly got more than 40% of
    my bikes on SORN.

I have about 5 untaxed, unsorned, motorbikes and 5 taxed or sorned. So
    what?

If I were a fairweather type I'd only tax the bike for the summer months
    - does that make me a VED evader?

The article is a reheated pile of crap that veers off about congestion
charge avoidance - motorcycles are exempt.

Classic Daily Mailesque "hooligans on two wheels" lazy journalism.

Two of mine are. No mention of SORN in the news reports. And the two
I've got have been off the road for some time, and don't *need* to be
    SORNed.

I seem to remember reading the 40% figure came from a sample of one
    days observations somewhere in London.
After all they have everyones name and address and if its not taxed or
    sorned they can fine you.
I'm willing to bet there's loads of bikes on their computer that dont
actually exist as they were never informed that they were scrapped - I
can think of at least one of mine where that happened 2 decades
ago. They ought to cancel the registrations of anything where theres no
tax ,no sorn and the fine is unpaid after 6 months to sort their
database out once and for all.
Then the ANPR cameras and snatch squads can swing into action.....

Committee chairman Edward Leigh said: "Motorists and motorcyclists who
refuse to pay road tax are stealing from law-abiding taxpayers"

Mr Leigh might like to put his affairs in order then come and talk to me
about this comment. Sponging thieving politicians.

If I'm ever riding through Staffs, I'll try and just use the
north-south main roads. That'll fool them. Ha!

Turns out they get their figures (from 2006) this way:
    http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/statistic...icles/excisedutyevasion/estimatevedreview.pdf
I like the bit about "One consequence of this survey approach is that
the same vehicle may have multiple sightings during the survey
    period."
Nor do they mention how many SORN'ed vehicles were on their way to get
    an MOT.
If I've read this right the actual percentage of observed untaxed
bikes was 14.8% but somehow this becomes 40% when the figures get
    'weighted'......

they're all breaking the speed limit too!
