Right, garage clearout time

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by The Older Gentleman, Apr 3, 2009.

  1. It'a amazing how much clutter I've managed to accumulate in the last few
months. Lovely alloy wheel for a Yamaha Tenere, radiator and fan, brand
new service items for same... Got to be worth money.

Some Ducati stuff bought on the 'might as well' principle which, I now
accept, I'm unlikely ever to use. There's a brand new tacho in that lot.

Classic odds and sods that just seem to materialise. What is it about
garages? There's a fourth dimension like a black hole into which
treasured objects disappear, and a fifth dimension through which items
spring into being. I mean, I've just found a nice bike jacket that I
have absolutely no recollection of owning.

So this weekend is Spring Clean Time. I'm going to have a blitz and
    shovel it all onto eBay.

Now the serious question. Following my wife's mother's death at
Christmas, we're clearing out the house. Some stuff we want to keep for
sentimental or practical reasons: mementoes, objets d'art, some
    furniture items.

Then there's valuable stuff that we don't want, like a complete 1880s
Crown Derby tea service. Some odd antiques. A collection of old First
Day Covers. Some amazingly old and rare coins (like an Edward II silver
    sixpence).

What's the best thing to do with stuff like this? eBay or a physical
auction? Valuable furniture, I suppose, is more easily disposed of at a
physical auction, and I suppose we ought to take the coin collection to
Spinks. Stamps - well, they're easier to photograph for eBay so people
know what they're getting. But jewellery?

    Suggestions?

My old man had a trusted "antiques expert" in last week to value some old
toot, paintings etc. His take on it was that the market for this stuff is
absolutely shit right now, and ebay is as good as anything else.

BTW, bought this month's Bike, good read that article, and the rest of the mag
was excellent as well - and I am /not/ generally a magazine person, paying
for adverts doesn't appeal to me.

  4. Funny, that. You'd have thought people would be trying to invest in
    anything except banks.

    HoHum. Thanks for the info.

There wouldn't be a spare Scott oiler in there, would there?

This Pegaso, by jove it's keen to go (deviation), has one of

    But jewellery?
    (hesitation)

For the jewellery in good condition see if one of your local
jewellers will sell it on your behalf, for a consideration
    of course.
If it's not in a saleable condition, any number of buyers
will weigh it and give you **** all for it. They are keen to
    buy just now.

However, it sounds like there's someone before me in the queue.

I'm surprised by this statement, too. A lot of people suggest that there
is an ongoing flight of money from cash into stuff that doesn't need
Gordo's bailouts. Yes, people are actually saving more, but OTOH prices
for desirable classic cars etc have been firming up noticeably and not
    only in the UK.

Well, I suppose it's getting to the point where people are running out of

    Knock out.
Is there any chance of it landing at BOSM?
Not attending myself but I feel sure someone could collect
