I was planning to go there early-ish Saturday and probably leave early
enough to get to the SteveHfest, if I can make it. I'll be the bloke
swearing at^Wby British Engineering[1] with the rolls of film falling
out of his pockets while he's taking notes[2].

    Anyone fancy a meet?

[1] I'll be taking the Triumph as the Rover isn't ready yet[3].
[2] Trying to write a short article about the show for a German
magazine. That is, if I get some usable transparencies out of it this
    time...[4]
[3] Stop sniggering TOG. I'll try to remember to have a look for your
brochure - any particular year or will any 400/4 brochure do?
    [4] Never trust a camera's internal meter.

I'd have come with you, but I think I might need to be at home sticking
anything down that could get broken ;-)

  3. You need a nice little Nikon D100, you do
    See above
Preferably one that shows mine in glorious red, but any will do.
    Yeah, right.....

    Not in this case, no.
When I contacted them last year the conversation went something like
    this:

"OK, I'll email you the article, can I just attach the photos,
    professionally scanned?"

"No, please send original transparencies, TYVM"

It's a *German* ShiteOldCar/ShiteOldBike mag, they don't appear to do
    high-tech.
Gossen Variosix F vs internal meter in the type of ShiteOldCamera[1] I
tend to use is not much of a contest. TBF, the meter in the Minolta
X-700 I've got for occasions like these is pretty good and produces
    decently exposed transparencies.

[1] Look, I don't like modern, autofocus, everything electric
cameras. They're not intuitive to use for me[2], I'll stick with the
things where I have to twist lots of dials before taking a
picture. Granted, your D100 was better than more of the other modern
cameras I've tried, but none of the digital cameras I've tried so far
have made me want to open my wallet. A potential exception is
currently under development[3] but I don't have a house to remortgage
    just to buy the body.

[2] I don't have to think about using the camera at all when using my
Leica and not very much when using the ShiteOldMinolta.

[3] Leica R9 with digital back. According to the specs I've seen, it's
a 10mp full frame sensor and appearantly you can switch backs to use
it as a 35mm camera as well.

The Older Gentleman let forth with a mighty belch and uttered :
Weston incident light meter vs, well, for the rangefinder, no meter. For the
SLR, I wouldn't trust the built in meter for anything other than flat lit
landscapes. Certainly never for photographing anything with a confusing
    range of reflective surfaces.

Take an incident reading. Sun goes behind a cloud, open up a stop. Becomes
overcast, open two or re-meter. Really heavy shadows and high contrast?,
blast a bit of flash into the shadows to reduce the contrast to be within
    the films range.

I like flash sync at any speed on the range finder :)
