Every now & again i get a loud ringing in my left ear & it goes deaf for
a few seconds. It's not there all the time & has done it from time to
time over the years, but seems to be more prevelant at the minute.

I always wear earplugs on the bike & dont listen to silly loud music.

    Any ideas?

My mate had that. Turned out to be a brain tumour. He's got a metal plate in his skull now.
You're lucky it's on the left, where the wife sits when you're driving and trying to ignore her.

Tinnitus. I get something similar but it's not loud. It happens once
    or twice a week.

That's what the doc told me.
I have tinnitus in the right ear. Sometimes it's annoying but you get used to it.
The doc said that it's because I have high-frequency hearing loss in that ear,
the nerves from ear to brain are 'filling in' the missing frequencies.
And if I listen to loud music the tinnitus gets louder to match.
But I can ignore it, just like a woman's incessant babbling.
Sometimes I hear a ticking like an old wristwatch, which is strange because I
can hardly hear a real watch in the right ear. And sometimes there's a sudden
loud hissing which lasts for a few seconds. Can't remember which ear that is.
I do not panic, and try to get as far away from the sonic source as possible. :)

Am I right in saying that Nige owns a company that installs alarms?

IANAD but I work with audiologists on hearing damage in riding. Get to
a doctor and have your hearing checked pronto. If it is disease,
remember that damage to your auditory system can affect your balance
as well so it's best to get it caught as soon as possible.

  14. Using the patented Mavis Beacon "Hunt&Peck" Technique, Eiron
That's pretty unlikely in Nige's case.
