Road Charging?

  1. Now how's playing with words. I was referring to the article I quoted,
    line and verse.
OK The article I quoted for your reference were not my words. (IWA/from
    the Guardian)

The OED has a lot more in before you mention it!

I chose with great care the word *support* and I notice that in good
play ground fashion you keep using the work *funding* and its'
    implications to support your line.

As I explained earlier in this thread the canals get *support* from many
of the agencies *funded* by the government as well as direct *funding*
    of its' own.

With the removal/reduction of funding by the government to the agencies
that provide support to (and including the canals), the government has
removed the majority of its' support of the canals.

Which is what I said. Remember I did not say *funding*.

From the reports by the Inland Waterways Association if the maintenance
    work is not carried out.

Just google for it. I gave you a lead to the right web site.
    Do me a favour!

If I wanted to draw attention to anything for political purposes I
wouldn't have used an obscure 3 month old news item on a topic I hold
    dear. I could just say:

    Blair never lied to parliament.

Brown has covered up the huge short fall and large loan the government
has taken out so it looks like we have made a miraculous turn round this
    month.

Blair and Brown are no longer eligible to hold there seats in parliament
if du process was allowed to be carried out over the finance of their
    own personal political campaigns.

    See it's much easier :)

Or why not prove what I have said about the Inland Waterways is wrong.
Oh, and quote the sources to back it up. Remembering the words I've used
and you're not to edit them.

  2. Just playing the playground game.
    Try reading this:

    http://www.waterways.org.uk/News/CurrentCampaigns/DefraCuts

If you don't want to read it, here are a few extracts:

    Not my words.
I didn't make any of the extracts up.
All words are in the OED.

Me I'm going into 'very busy' mode so you wont get anything out of me
for a while. If you have further questions wander around the site:
    http://www.waterways.org.uk
You will find everything I've said referred to, some where there.

Remember it's the total effect on the IW not just its' government
funding and is the cause, the government or not.

Look upon it as a project. Narrow boating is great fun. I may even
    convert you.

"therefore notes with alarm that the Department for Environment, Food
and Rural Affairs has reduced British Waterways' grant by 15 per cent.
    this year resulting in a devastating effect upon the inland waterways;
further notes that 180 British Waterways' staff are to lose their jobs
and canals are to be closed; and calls upon the Government immediately
to reinstate the cuts imposed upon British Waterways and to ensure
long-term funding is guaranteed to enable continued investment and
    restoration of the waterways."

“very concerned about the impact of the funding cuts to British
Waterways and / or the Environment Agency because they will deteriorate
    without sufficient maintenance"

"It has advised BW that its grant will be required to decrease still
further from the level to which it has now been cut in this financial
year. The consequence of this is that BW is likely to lose planned
funding of £60 million over the five years from 2006/07 to 2010/11."

"BW has begun to assess the implications of the likely need to make
savings of between £10 million and £12 million per annum over the next
five years and has indicated that it may need to delay or abandon some
waterway restoration programmes, close some waterways, shed considerable
numbers of employees and increase boat licence fees, possibly by 30%
    initially."

  3. We should see the road pricing as a fantastic opportunity to boost our
activities - provided bikes are exempt from charging al la London of
    course!

Less non-esential traffic means less accidents, less stress, more open
roads. We would need to use this new space wisely to avoid more
'crackdowns' and of course there will be a need to lobby manufacturers
to make bikes much more fuel-efficient to avoid more criticism than we
already get - but if we get our act together and act as a body rather
than a buch of selfish individuals we might get somewhere.......

Can I just jump in here? No? Oh, tough.

    I'm not sure if you're just being blind to what Neal's been saying;
I'm sure you're keen to promote awareness of what you see as important
issues, but he's not been trying to argue that there isn't a problem,
quoting reductions of 15% just, yet again, supports his assertion that
your statements regarding the 'majority' of support appear to have no
    grounding in facts.

The rest of the quoted text talks about further potential reductions
in support, but again, any figures actually given are _much_ lower
than the 51% you'd have to quote to justify your statements.

  7. Even so; 15% cuts would have a tremendous knock-on effect on a
organisation which has always been underfunded.

    So?

I mean, for one, that's not in dispute.

And two, who gives a ****? I mean really. Apart from Mick and you,
    obviously.

  10. Maybe the people who use and enjoy the canals gaf. Oh, but that's all
right, they can just stump up more cash to make up the shortfall.

Who the **** do you want to pay for it?

Perhaps we should put a levy on everyone who parks their car in town
centres rather than being sensible enough to use out of town shopping
centres? I've always been in favour of punishing the poor and the
    feeble minded.

Just charge to use all lanes except the left hand lane on all roads.
    That would increase capacity significantly.

  13. Why, everybody; so that a few may enjoy themselves at the national
expense, just like the Opera, or the Arts.

Seriously, to let the canal system wither away is incredibly
short-sighted. I've a feeling they'll be needed again as part of an
    integrated distribution system.
