road spikes

"Four of the six times police used spikes resulted in unexpected and
potentially dangerous outcomes such as innocent drivers hitting the
spikes or police running over them."

Now while cops doing themselves in is funny, a motorcycle running over
    these isn't.

Hasn't happened yet, but one suspects it's only a matter of time.

Motorcycles - the vehicle that's only remembered when it comes to
    raising revenue.

Read again. Especially the bit about "innocent drivers".

Or are you one of the "if you have done nothing wrong you have nothing
    to fear" types?

dunno what spikes you have over there , but ours are hollow and are designed
slowly deflate the tyres - not cause a sudden blowout - the dangerous bits
have been when offenders vehicles have served around them trying to avoid
    them......
aaahhh okay, so cops chasing offenders for whatever reason , not just for
    traffic offences is funny.......
    ......yes al.......

okay then what would you suggest , pulling up along side them and shooting
out their tyres - one handed like they do in the movies,
or maybe just dont chase them at all and let them go free no matter what
    they've done

Name one other tactic that Australian Police can use in a pursuit?
I know you'll find that they don't have many tricks up their sleeves and in
most cases the pursuit continues until the suspect stops or has an accident.

What has the greater chance of endangering "innocent drivers"?

I think you'd be pretty daft if you can't see the flashing blue and red
lights up ahead and not take some caution as you approach.

You're assuming that's what I'm assuming. They're not supposed to be
    obvious....it defeats the purpose.

You wouldn't expect a car which is not being chased to clean you up
while you innocently cruise through a green light, but it may happen,
but not often enough to make me avoid green lights. Feel free to
dispute my memory, but most of the time you hear news reports about
people being injured/killed during high speed pursuits it's the
occupants of the car doing the runner, or the occupants of the car doing
the chasing that add to the statistics. Usually these sorts of things
occur at times of the day when there aren't many vehicles on the roads
anyway, it's hard to run at high speed during peak hour.

OF course... if you subscribe to the COPS view of the world...

Why do you gotta? Surely they'll stop of their own accord, or do crims
    have perpetual motion?

The entire argument towards spike use is to minimise the time spent engaged
    in a pursuit.
My question towards you is to identify a tactic that is as effective.

Police helos aren't always available to monitor pursuits nor are they
available in significant numbers with the frequency that pursuits occur. In
Vic, there is a pursuit at least every day.

If you're going to quote someone, you should quote the person I was
quoting instead of snipping them out. :)

Considering the driving I saw today travelling through central Brisbane
I would say bordering on suicide , cars popping red lights at 4 seconds
    or so .. shudder.
