Is the intention of double demerits to slow down road users and make
them drive more safely, or to make them so fearful of the results of
their actions that they will lock their vehicles in the garage and not
even use them? Same net result perhaps, for the specific weekend in
question, but whatever the risk was which double demerits are attempting
to reduce is merely being shifted to another day. I cannot see how even
the best government spin could count that as a success.

Do you think most of the revenue comes from 110 zones..
    ...or 60/50/40 zones?

The spin goes something like, "Horrific road toll over Xmas period. In this
Xmas period, which this year we dragged out over three weekends for max
revenue, being a period of 18 days, ignorant and willfully disobedient
motorists deliberately flouting our messahe of safety, killed 32 people.
Next time we are going to double the points and the fines again, and will
continue to do so until you bastards learn to behave".

Note the careful maths and that 1600 people die on Oz roads in an average
    year, 3 a day. I don't think it's enough.

    Think of the revenue.

How about instead of a mobile speed camera have a mobile speed chip fryer*,
you speed past a check point and your vehicle no longer works. Tow truck
handy to move it (at a cost) and you get left with a $1000+ bill to replace
all the computers and a fine.

    Plus the inconvenience.

    The points.

Sure this won't matter if you have stolen the car but you are no longer
    getting away.

BTW, once stop sticks are deployed they can be removed once the vehicle
    being pursued passes.

    :p

    *needs a better name.

    Whom does it hurt if you do 115 in a 110 zone? 120? 140? 160? 180? Really.
I've done 180 in a 110 zone and I'm still alive. I've also done that when it
    wasn't illegal.

It seems to me that you are. Are you not? Well, I did extrapolate your
glib one liner a fairly long way, but maybe you would like to propose some
    form of concrete solution.
I agree that is a problem. However, your solution of letting them go, in my
view, creates another and potentially bigger problem. I would love to hear
    something that resolves that.

Chasing at high speed is certainly not a solution, and neither is letting
    them go. What next?

But if the net effect is the same, what is the issue? I mean aside from the
dramatic news stories and TV coverage...

I know it makes a difference. I have seen the TAC commercials.
You want to argue with physics, try stepping of a building or in front of a
    truck.

Yeah, those newspaper truckies may be out of touch with reality.... I can't
remember the last time I looked at a REAL newspaper. And once all the old
buggers who insist on PAPER newspapers have shuffled off this mortal coil,
the newspaper truckies will have to start speeding to transport some other
    Vital Thing.... like, um.....

And when the limiters kick in on some trucks, you nearly go thru the
screen! or I did in Isuzu 14 palleter i drove for Chemtrans for while
and had another gear to go....

It was a short answer to illustrate the principle.

Technology exists today to fit speed limiting devices to vehicles which
will operate at the appropriate speed limit, be it 40,50,60, etc.
