Round Oz on a Guzzi Cali

Discussion in 'Australian Motorcycles' started by Martin Taylor, Sep 9, 2003.

  1. I just got a call from a good friend. He was retrenched from his 15 year
job earlier this year. He decided, bugger it, I'm gonna do THE trip. He
spent nearly 3 months touring Oz on his Guzzi Cali. Sounds like he had a
    ball too.

17,780 km and 94 fuel stops, dodging roos on the Nullabor, wearing
cockatoos at 120 km/h and good weather, apart from some rain on the
Nullabor which seemed to attract every 'roo in the desert there onto the
roads to drink out of the pools of water.

He got some extraordinary mileage out of his tyres - 21,000 km out of
the front tyre, a Metzler Marathon, and about 15,000 km out of the rear
Marathon. The front tyre is still in roadworthy condition. Shit, and
here I am thinking that I'm getting a good run out of a touring Pirelli
with 4,000 km up and the tyre's still OK...

Thing is, he did the trip by himself, with his missus flying into Broome
to ride with him to Alice Springs, then flying home again. Bloody long
way to go by yourself, I reckon. Still, there are those who can do that
    and love it.

I get a bit under a year out of a rear, averaging around 350km/week, so
    that's what, yeah, 15,-17000+. That's a Bridgestone dual compound, but I
get that sort of mileage on most tyres.

Low horsepower will do that for you! The bikes are heavy, but easy on
tyres. Fairly frugal on the juice, and can be serviced by any car mech.
(As long as they are old enough to know what pushrods are....)

If you want to do round Oz, you can do a lot worse than a touring Guzzi.

You're stacking up a lot of whooshes in a very short time, atec.

Perhaps you need a google on "not doing it right" :)

I get 12-15K out of my rears and twice that out of front. The front I
have now has done 30K and is not worn out yet. I'm changing it next
    week.

I'd love to do that trip. I've been training with nine West-East-West
trips so far, but they're only about 10K kms each.
