Route recommendation?

I'm going from here in Leicester to Bisley, Surrey on Thursday in my
    Sooty van.
The usual route would be M1/M25/M3, but being as I'll have a top speed
of 65mph, and a typical speed of 55mph, I think it may be more sensible
to do the 'A' road route.
The first bit is easy - A5 to South of Luton/M25 area. From there, I'm
    stumped.
So, any routes to take to get from there to SW M25 area?
    Thanks
    Alan.

Just get on the motorway and sit behind a lorry in the left lane.

    That bad then?
I'll be leaving here at 8am, so M25 area at 10ish. I havent been round
there for at least 5 years, but it used to flow reasonably well in the
middle of the day, is it solid all the time now?

AOL. Not like the M25 moves much faster than that anyway, most of the time.

I'd be mildly surprised if you had a problem.

Well the roadworks from J10 of the M1 to the M25 are a classic place
for queues, and then once you're on the M25, it's a lottery. The
journey from my place (J9 M1) to Heathrow takes ~35 mins at night, but
can take up to 2 hours on a weekday morning. If you're lucky, it will
flow all the way at 50-70, if you're not, take a good book.....

Follow-up, I had planned to do the M1/25/3 route on the way down, but
due to a queue getting onto the M1 at Junc. 20, I carried straight on to
use the A5 to M1 Junc. 9. Wasnt a particularly bad journey to J.9,
though Towcester and Dunstable were slow due to traffic and lights.
No delays through the M1 works, but the M25 was pretty solid from J.19
to 14 - there didnt seem to be any cause for it either - no crashes or
breakdowns. 1hr 25m to do - what, maybe 25 miles?

The Sooty van coped well in this slower than a crawl drive, and indeed,
on the return journey at 55-60mph, where there were no delays, and it
returned ~40mpg, which isnt bad for a van full of steel tubing.

I can see why there are so many accidents on the M25.The standard of
driving is bloody appalling by some drivers. 70+mph, 1 cars gap - no
problem, they'll get in there. I had a lorry driver 10 foot from my rear
bumper flashing his lights, I presume to get me out of the way, when
there is traffic all round me, everyone doing 45-50mph through the
    roadworks.
I think the driving can be poor here in the Midlands, but I dont see
such bad driving round here more than once a week, cetainly not as
    regularly as I did today.
