With my rego papers for the car I got some advertising bumph, part of
which is, New motor cycle plates now available, visit an rta
registry,myplates.com or call 131758. Are they hoping every one will get
one? or enough so that they can push for a law change.

myplates.com gives you a Texas Dept of Motor Vehicles site.
Don't tell me that I not only missed the AFL Grand Final while I was away
but that Mr Obama annexed Oz as part of the USA as well!

  3. Not in NSW myself but from the web address it sounds perhaps like a greater
choice of personal (vanity) plates avaiable. No mention of "Front " if
    that's your assertion.

As a more or less on topic comment......

It was with some regret that I handed back to the RTA, my yellow and
    black plate, CU202.

It is the only motorcycle registration that I actually managed to
remember, but I guess that was because I have had it, on the same bike,
    since 1988.

After some money changed hands, the RTA gave me a splendid, purple on
white plate, with "NSW Historic Vehicle" on the bottom line, which, I
think looks good on the Z50. :)

  13. So Cam, what did a red plate cost and any news on the 90 or 45 day permit
    from NSW?
Almost everyone thinks iit is a great idea, but in reality, it will only add
costs to the registration of a red plated vehicle
Remembering, that they will not give anything away for nothing
there is always a charge to whatever they do.
At least, that is what they are advocating in Victoria
there will be a catch somewhere, it all depends on how quickly you will find
    it

I used to have FU042 (Green Trump)and I was very sad to lose that (both the
    plate and the bike!).

I was gonna' say "can't remember any others" but suddenly BV113 (Pantah),
JQ850 (Lil' Red Throbber) and CF something-or-other (Red Trump) spring to
    mind for no particular reason.

The white, with purple numbers cost $111, including green slip, and the

Dunno about these permit things, although there was a box on the form
for getting 3 month or 6 month rego instead of the whole year.
The "saving" isn't actually terribly significant for Bluey, in the
realms of maybe $150 or so for the year, and would be greater for a
    larger, more powerful motorcycle.

OTOH, the conditions attached to using a "Historic Vehicle", while the
same for all bikes, are less onerous for Bluey. After all, how far am I
    likely to ride a Z50? :)

As I understand it, the conditions are negotiated between the club and
the RTA, and different clubs have different conditions.

My club association is with Ulysses Club, which, AFAIK, only works in
NSW at the moment, but I might be wrong.

The main "catch" that I am aware of is that, should I want to sell
Bluey, the club/hysteric rego isn't transferable, and, to go back to
full rego would probably need a blue slip, which could be done, but
    might take a while.

  16. In Victoria at the moment, they are talking about changing to 45 or 90 day
registration for red plated historic vehicles
with the cost being around $120 and $65 respectively and you will need to
    carry a log book.
Now, as it stands, if you have a red plated vehicle, you need to be either
on a club sponsored event, or another club's event to be able to take it out
on the road, apart of course, for trips to the repair shop.

But, what a few are doing, I say a few, although I have been told that there
is quite a few, who take their vehicle out for a shopping trip or to see the
grandkids and give them a ride in an old vehicle.
The problem here, lies in the insurance and the Govco, which would also
include insurance companies, are jumping up and down because they say a
vehicle is being taken on the roads without proper insurance, so they are
proposing a 45 or a 90 day permit for travel on the roads with an historic
vehicle for use without a club organised event, but with a log book for the
    appropriate details.
What I have heard is that the RTA in Victoria, even though it is only in
thte idea section at the moment, the new system will come in at the start of
    2011.

It will be great for someone with more than 2 classic, historic, veteran or
vintage vehicles as the vehicle would only have to be registered for a 45
day permit, which would make it almost one trip a week, I do know of a few
people who have over 10 bikes wghich could be red plated so the cost would
be $650 or thereabouts for the 10 bikes, whereas, the system now, would be
    $1100.

But, in saying all that, I also know of a bloke who moved to South
Australia, where this system is supposed to be working and everyone is
    totally happy with it ??
He joined a local club and went to red plate it with the scrutineers and
    they knocked it back
A beautiful 1936 Norton which looked almost better than concours
The reson they knocked it back?

It was because the wheels he had put on were not original type wheels,
He had put alloys rims and the original were steel.
The srutineers told him they had instructions that any vehicle applying for
red plates had to be of original manafacture with no alterations in the
style of parts, OEM or copies only
The last I heard from him as that he is moving back to the civilized country
    of Victoria.

I am taking a 1954 Triumph in for a red plate today, got it in from the UK
    last week.

  17. Historic plates can be used in any state if you're travelling, that's
how vintage cars go to national rallies etc. My retired boss took his
T model Ford around OZ on NSW historic plates, it wasn't a problem as
the run was a club event (and they did check with the RTA before
    leaving).

Yes, Al, I did phrase the comment badly.

I meant that I have no knowledge of states other than NSW having reached
agreement with Ulysses Club for Historic plates being issued.

I believe discussions are underway for some agreement in Queensland.

But, a historic plated NSW vehicle is allowed to go pretty much anywhere
in Oz, if it is on or to a club organised event, and the vehicle is
listed as traveling in the club's day book.

That's true Alan, but you have to remember to carry the paperwork, such as
the rally details, with you, just in case you get stopped.

A couple of blokes I know were on their way to a rally in Central Victoria
and got pulled over by the local copper in Tarnagulla, who, upon seeing the
red plates, immediately inquired as to what they were as he ha never seen or
heard of them before, which was odd, as there are quite a few rallies held
    in that area.
After showing the copper the paperwork for the rally and after he checked up
on his radio, he let them continue.

Damn, these radio contraptions sure do make life easier
