John Mortimer, creator of Rumpole, has died. RIP.

Pretty bloody warm if it's anything like here. I'm sat here with the
back door open, wearing nowt but jeans & a T-shirt. I have been doing a
lot of humping today though (3 dump runs so far), so maybe that's why
    I'm sweating on a bit.

I'm sure whoever she is she's flattered you call it a "dump run"

A documentary on BBC4 tonight reminded me that he should be remembered
for more than that, including the Oz obscenity trial, and a debate on
pornography, versus Mary Whitehouse and Michael Howard.

    Well worth seeing.

I saw the tail end of a trailer for that about an hour ago. As I wasn't
actually paying attention to the TV at the time, I had a brief
    corner-of-the-eye "**** me, it's TOG" moment.

Uncanny. No interest in motorcycles AFAIK though.

His views on the importance of being able to offend people could make
him an honorary UKRMer, but he would certainly be awarded a BHaLC.

"'There's a great division in life,' Mortimer told an interviewer. 'You
either think people are fundamentally ghastly and therefore need
Draconian treatment and discipline and ordering about otherwise they'll
go mad and rape the traffic warden.

'Or else you think they are fundamentally decent and rather nice, but
sometimes they will stray and do misguided things through no fault of
their own. I definitely belong to the second lot of people.'"

Having just watched a rather nice documentary about him, I now that
Mortimer fathered five children - a boy and a girl with his first
wife, an illegitimate son with Wendy Craig, and two daughters (Emily
and Rosie) with his second wife. Emily is indeed the looker, but
    Rosie is quite spunky.

Emily is indeed the looker, but
Other way round I think. There's also the added bonus that 24 yr old
    Rosie is into older men.

There was some great footage of him in a debate at the Oxford Union
against Mary Whitehouse and Micheal Howard. His mastery of rhetoric
and is amazing delivery was a pleasure to watch.
