John Mortimer, creator of Rumpole, has died. RIP.

A documentary on BBC4 tonight reminded me that he should be remembered for more than that, including the Oz obscenity trial, and a debate on pornography, versus Mary Whitehouse and Michael Howard. I saw the tail end of a trailer for that about an hour ago. As I wasn't actually paying attention to the TV at the time, I had a brief corner-of-the-eye "**** me, it's TOG" moment.
Uncanny. No interest in motorcycles AFAIK though. His views on the importance of being able to offend people could make him an honorary UKRMer, but he would certainly be awarded a BHaLC. Having just watched a rather nice documentary about him, I now that Mortimer fathered five children - a boy and a girl with his first wife, an illegitimate son with Wendy Craig, and two daughters (Emily and Rosie) with his second wife. Emily is indeed the looker, but Rosie is quite spunky.

There was some great footage of him in a debate at the Oxford Union against Mary Whitehouse and Micheal Howard. His mastery of rhetoric and is amazing delivery was a pleasure to watch.
